College of Liberal Arts and Law

The Education of Humanities at Tongji University started as early as the beginning of the 20th century; when students from the University played an important part in the New Culture Movement. In the end of 1940's the College of Law (with the Department of Law) and the College of Liberal Arts (with the Department of Philosophy, the Department of Chinese Language and Literature, the Department of Foreign Languages and the Department of History) merged into the College of Liberal Arts and Law. (This College was then transferred to Fudan University, during the nation wide restructuring of universities.) The College was restored in 1993 following the merging of the Department of Social Sciences with the Department of Foreign Languages. (the latter became an independent College in 1998.)

The College of Liberal Arts and Law consists of five departments and five research institutes.
