The Sino-German College of Applied Sciences is a joint educational program sponsored by the Chinese and German governments. Now the program is being carried on by Tongji and its German cooperative partners. The College aims to introduce the operating mode of Applied Sciences Universities in Germany and to turn out international business professionals for both countries. Students enrolled in this college are expected to be able to speak English and German fluently after studying the undergraduate program for four years. They are also required to master the specialized knowledge in their own fields of studies as well as get familiar with rules in international scientific practice and in other related fields.
The College emphasizes the students' ability in problem solving. Apart from regular field practice, students will also have an opportunity to do internships in Chinese companies and German-Chinese joint ventures for a term. Outstanding students are entitled to do field work in Germany. A considerable number of graduate theses will be generated from students' intern experiences.
The specialties taught in the College are mainly engineering related, but cross-discipline education is also heavily stressed, so the students will be also taught the basics of economics. Curriculum and teaching plans will be designed by experts from both specialties. Senior engineers from real world business enterprises will also be involved in the College's business skill cultivation program.
The College will adopt bilingual teaching with German as the first foreign language since the students will be living in Germany for one term. Students are required to have the experience of studying in Germany to ensure the students' cross-cultural capability. The students' English, the second foreign language, should reach the Band-4 level.
Students will be awarded a Bachelor degree by Tongji University upon successful completion of the required courses with qualified grades in examinations. The students can also obtain the Bachelor degree from the German partner university if they meet the requirements of the German degree-conferring system. According to the agreement on mutual degree recognition between the two countries, the German partner university will recognize degrees conferred by Tongji University and the students can thus pursue their study for master's degrees in Germany. Similarly, Tongji University recognizes credits and degrees that students get in German universities and will accept German students to study here.
The departments to be set up first in the College include the Department of Mechanical and Electronic Engineering, the Department of Automobile Service Engineering, the Department of Intelligent Technology of Architectural Facilities.
