Following a ceremony held in Shanghai on 16 September, 2006, the Sino-Italian Campus, which will enable both Chinese and Italian students to obtain a degree recognized in both countries, was inaugurated. The Politecnico di Milano and the Politecnico di Torino, for the Italian part, in collaboration with Tongji University, for the Chinese part, have instituted two joint first level degree courses (B.Sc.), respectively in MPE (Mechanical & Production Engineering) and in Information Technology Engineering (ITE). On completion of the four-year course, Chinese students at Tongji University will obtain a first-level degree recognized both by Tongji University and Politecnico di Milano and Politecnico di Torino. Italian students from the Politecnico di Milano or Politecnico di Torino, participating in the degree course in MPE or ITE, will obtain an equivalent first-level degree title recognized both by the Politecnico di Milano and the Politecnico di Torino. A further six month period of laboratory and research activities at the Tongji University of Shanghai will enable Italian students to also obtain the first-level Chinese degree title.
As the first joint project of State level on higher education between China and Italy, the Sino-Italian College is also engaged to promote the close cooperation with enterprises, public and cultural institutions from both countries, aiming at establishing an open platform for academic, scientific, industrial and cultural exchange between China and Italy.
