The second class of Science, Culture and the Ocean entitled Mankind and the Ocean started on March 21th 2017. As a public class open to the university, it was delivered by Prof. WANG Pinxian, a senior academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, from the School of Ocean and Earth Science, Tongji University.
Prof. WANG started his class from the way human beings explored the ocean. According to him, human beings entered the seas and oceans horizontally in the 16th century and vertically in the 21th century, thus gradually coming to realize how big and deep they were. From then on, the focus of the global maritime economy has been shifting downward from the surface to the bottom of the ocean.
He pointed out particularly the problem with most people in our country that we have traditionally seen ourselves as living in a mainland country and taken the land territory of nine million km2 as the most important part of the country, ignoring the seas and oceans. He stated that unlike the closed and conservative land civilization, maritime civilization was open and adventurous, which had more advantages for exploration and innovation.
More than 160 carefully prepared slides with texts and pictures were shown during the 100-minute session. Brimming with energy and vitality, Prof. WANG demonstrated his outstanding speaking skills by arousing chuckles and laughs from the audience now and then who were simply kept spellbound throughout his speech .
