The College of Civil Engineering has the traditionally advantageous civil engineering programs that are the oldest, strongest and most comprehensive in Tongji University.
The College consists of The Department of Structural Engineering, the Department of Geotechnical Engineering, The Department of Bridge Engineering, the Department of Surveying and Geo-informatics and Research Institute of Structural Engineering and Disaster Prevention.
The college has five undergraduate programs, ten Master's programs and five PhD programs and two postdoctoral mobile stations. About 500 undergraduate students and 200 postgraduate students graduate from the College every year. Among the following programs, Bridge Engineering is listed as one of the most important programs in Shanghai; Structural Engineering and Geo-technical Engineering are listed as key programs of Shanghai; Bridge and Tunnel Engineering, Structural Engineering and Geo-technical Engineering are listed as the state key programs.
The College is rich in expertise and resources. There are 426 staff members in the College, 96 are full professors and 126 are associate professors. In addition, there are five academicians of Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering.
The College boasts first class facilities for its State Key Laboratory of Disaster Prevention in Civil Engineering and for other laboratories. The Boundary Layer Wing Tunnel Laboratory and Shaking Table Laboratory, which has been at an internationally leading edge in terms of the scale of facilities and technology, have undertaken a number of major research projects.
The College focuses on the teaching of basic theories, English and computer application to achieve the goal of producing quality professionals. The College has been active in developing cooperation in academic research with its international counterparts. It has signed agreements for exchange programs for undergraduate students with leading universities in Australia and the United Kingdom.
