Resource-efficient Campus in Tongji University
Tongji University has been taking the lead in building a resource-efficient campus nationwide since 2003, and getting consensus through the participation of faculty, students and staff on resource-saving. The resource-saving solution has been approached through three ways of technology, management and education, and with the participation of all and in every stage.
Energy-saving through technical approach
A variety of energy-saving systems such as solar water heating system for students’ bathhouse, electricity thermal storage boiler, bathhouse wastewater reuse and heat recovery, artificial wetland for wastewater treatment have been in operation on campus which based on renewable energy and resources recycling development policy. Energy-saving and water-saving measures have been highlighted, which makes it possible that 100% of the irrigation water on campus comes from non-tap-water sources. The national energy-saving design standards have been strictly observed in the new projects, which achieving the performance of building energy saving at more than 65%. The new materials and Eco- technologies for building energy saving have been applied in the rebuilding or renewal of historical buildings, such as heat-insulating, low-E windows, architectural sun shading, roof greening, and energy-saving lighting. The projects adjust measures according to local conditions and have adopted geothermal heat pump which uses the renewable thermal energy from ground source, air cooling/heating preconditioning system with the tunnel wind ventilation, and the comfortable and energy-efficient radiant cooling /heating system. The displacement air-conditioning and hybrid ventilation system are also been applied in large space of building. The application of the ice storage air-conditioning system is beneficial to city power grid peak load shifting. In brief, the application of these integrated energy-saving technologies plays an exemplary role in energy saving of campus facilities while achieving remarkable economic benefits and the effect of environment protection.
Energy-saving through management approach
The management in practicing energy-saving and resource-saving has brought great economic benefits for Tongji University. The university attaches great importance to the management of electric power and water use for students. The installation of intelligent card faucets in the bathhouse and dormitories and the use of all-in-one cards for paying for water and electric power fee on campus have led to a decrease of electric power and water consumption by more than 40% and 30% respectively. In addition to saving water, the bathhouse can receive over 4,000 people each day, 1.5 times increase as compared to its previous capacity of 1,700 people. Therefore, a large amount of investment in building the new bathhouse has been saved.
Energy-saving through education and behavior approach
Multi-level energy-saving education and practice bases have been established on campus for demonstrating and popularizing the energy-saving technologies, promoting the energy-saving awareness, and offering support and guidance to energy-saving activities of the students. A series of theme activities of the students such as Water-saving and Power-saving Week, food-saving Week, Green Week of Environment Protection has been held on campus. In 2005 students took the initiative and organized the Energy-saving Supervisory Team on campus. This team works not only to supervise but also to educate in terms of energy saving.
Supported by its academics strength, the university offers well-planned courses in energy saving and environment protection. Lectures on energy saving and resources recycling have also been held for people both inside and outside of the university, which plays the role of disseminating the know-how of energy saving while serving the society.
Saving energy through technology, management, and education has brought remarkable effects. The total energy cost in 2006 is 12 million RMB fewer than that of the budget. Tongji University has been built up as the resource-saving demonstration model of the resource-efficient campus nationwide.
The Rescouce-efficient Campus Construction Management and Technological Guidelines in Higher Educational Institutions, the nationwide regulation has been done in Tongji University. The academic researches are leading the construction of the resource-efficient campus while the latter promotes the former. This also offers great support in science and technology to energy saving and emission reduction for the society. |
