We proudly introduce the members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) who distinguish themselves for their remarkable achievements in their research fields not only among the faculty members of Tongji University, but the researchers in China.

(1)CHANG Qing

Architect and professor of Tongji University.CHANG is one of the prominent Chinese scholars in the field of traditional architecture and built heritage conservation and regeneration.

CHANG graduated from the Department of architecture of Xi'an University of architecture and technology in 1982, obtained his master's degree from the Graduate School of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1987 and his doctor's degree from Southeast University in 1991. In 2009, he was elected as Honorary Fellow, College of Fellows, the American Institute of Architects (Hon. FAIA). In 2015, he was elected Academician of CAS.

Based on historical study with comparative and anthropological perspectives, his researches and practices persist in discovery and revitalization of the values of traditional architecture and Chinese culture. Starting from the 1980s, during master and doctoral period in Beijing and Nanjing, he started his early research focusing on architecture and heritage along the ancient Silk Roads in Western China and central Asia. After moving to Shanghai, he gradually broadened his heritage researches in the last two decades, from the ancient to more recent, from conservation to regeneration, from urban artifacts in the semi-colonial period of Shanghai, to the vernacular remains in China as a whole.

He has designed many well-known architecture and heritage projects; and won a series of domestic and international awards for the efforts to bridge the past, present and future developments. Prof. CHANG is also the leading advocator and educator of heritage preservation. He is the founder of the first Historic Preservation Bachelor Program in China, and the chair professor of the Historic Preservation academic and professional team in Tongji CAUP.

(2)CHEN Yihan

CHEN Yihan is an excellent cardiologist and a medical scientist. Currently he serves as VicePresident of Oriental Hospital Affiliated to Tongji University. Through more than two decades of clinical and biomedical research work, he has made remarkable achievements with regard to treatment and pathogenesis of cardiac arrhythmias and heart failure, and was elected Academician of CAS in 2015 because of his outstanding contributions.

CHEN received his bachelor’s degree in clinical medicine from Medical School of Nantong University in 1987. He then joined the affiliated hospital of Nantong University, as a resident physician in the department of cardiology, and received his MS degree five years later in this university. In 1996, CHEN received his Ph.D. degree in cardiology from Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, and successively worked as a cardiologist in the department of cardiology in the Tongji Hospital affiliated to Tongji University until 2010.

During his clinical practices in cardiology, CHEN has been focusing on the diagnosis and treatment of cardiac arrhythmias and heart failure, and leading a group carrying out a series of projects in the field of cardiology, with special emphasis on the explorations of novel molecular mechanisms and pharmacological targets beyond the traditional concepts.

Major contributions:

Ø the genetic and electrophysiological mechanisms of various arrhythmias;

Ø the hypothesis that the myocardial cell logistics system can widely regulate cardiac electro-mechanical functions;

Ø the molecular valve effect of the mitochondrial outer membrane translocation enzyme complex subunit of cardiomyocytes in the occurrence of chronic heart failure;

Ø a new mechanism for adrenergic receptor regulation of cardiac oxygen metabolism.

(3)HE Manchao

HE Manchao is an internationally reputed expert in rock mechanics of mine engineering. At present, he is a professor of China University of Mining and Technology, Beijing (CUMTB) and Tongji University. He received his Bachelor and Master Degree in engineering geology from Changchun College of Geology in 1981 and 1985 respectively, and, in 1989, obtained his Ph.D. in Engineering Mechanics from CUMTB; in 2011, he was awarded an honorary PhD degree from Université de Mons, Belgium.

HE is mainly engaged in the theoretical and technical research on the control of large deformation of rock mass in mines. He proposed the concept and classification of "slow deformation" and "sudden deformation" of large deformation disasters. He developed several sets of experimental systems for the mechanism of large deformation disasters and the Laboratory for Geomechanics and Deep Underground Engineering. A large number of experiments enabled him to reveal the rules of large-scale deformation disasters in mine rock masses. Based on his concept of high constant resistance large deformation anchor cable of negative Poisson’s ratio effect, a series of products have been successfully applied to mine engineering, achieving proven effect in the control of "slow deformation" and "sudden deformation" large-deformation disasters.

He won one Second Prize of National Technological Invention Awardand three Second Prize of the State Scientific and Technological Progress Award.

(4)PEI Gang

PEI Gang, a cell biologist, is a professor of Tongji University. He received his BSc and MSc from Shenyang College of Pharmacy (China) in 1981 and 1984 respectively, and his PhD from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (USA) in 1991. He was elected academician of CAS in 1999.

PEI is a world leading expert in the area of GPCR signaling regulation and functions. He is mainly engaged in the research of cell signal transduction and its regulation mechanism.

Findings:

Ø A novel function of β-arrestin 1 as a cytoplasm-nucleus messenger in GPCR signaling and further elucidate an epigenetic mechanism for direct GPCR signaling from cell membrane to the nucleus through signal-dependent histone modification.

Ø The important role of opioid receptor signal desensitization and negative feedback regulation in the formation of opioid addiction;

Ø The crosstalk between the excitatory amino acid receptor and the opioid receptor signal transduction pathway;

Ø Oxidized low-density lipoprotein can inhibit the growth of smooth muscle cells by activating p38MAPK through the G protein pathway;

Ø Albumen trichosanthin, an active ingredient of traditional Chinese medicine, can bind to HIV co-receptors (chemokine receptors), enhance the activation of the receptors, and exert anti-HIV effects.

Ø Five-time transmembrane chemokine receptor has the function of a normal seven-time transmembrane GCPR.

(5)SUN Jun

SUN Jun, an expert in tunnel and underground construction engineering, is a professor of Tongji University. A native of Shaoxing, Zhejiang Province, he was born in Suzhou, Jiangsu Province and graduated from the Department of Civil Engineering of Shanghai Jiao Tong University in 1949. To acknowledge his contributions to tunnel and underground building engineering, he was elected academician of CAS in 1991.

SUN is noted for his creation of underground structure engineering mechanics, a new disciplinary branch in 1960. His academic researches include the theory of elastic, viscous and plastic characteristics of underground structure, rheology of rock soil materials, and the explosion-resistance dynamics of underground protective structures. In the past ten years, he applied engineering and soft science theories and methods (focusing on Intelligent Science) to the urban environment.

Since the 1980s, Prof. SUN has accomplished over 40 projects of National Key Scientific and Technological Research,National Natural Science Foundation of China and various key engineering research projects, with findings having achieved enormous technical and economic benefits. As early as in 1960, he founded the major of tunnel and underground construction engineering in Tongji University, the first major of its kind in China.

(6)WANG Pinxian

WANG Pinxian, a Chinese marine geologist, is a professor of the School of Marine and Geosciences of Tongji University, and director of the State Key Laboratory of Marine Geology. He was elected academician of CAS) in 1991. He was vice president of the International Scientific Committee for Ocean Research (SCOR), 1994–1998. He has served as vice chairman of the Division of Earth Sciences of CAS, and president of the Chinese Committee on Ocean Research.

He has been engaged in research on marine micropaleontology and evolution of its environmental pattern for decades and has made creative contributions to the development of marine geology in China. He started the research on the burial of microfossils in China and has developed the research on paleoceanography considerably. His research on Dynamic Progression and Development Trend of the Evolution of Environment in the last 150,000 years in Drought and Semi-drought Areas won the first prize for the Advancement of Science and Technology awarded by Chinese Academy of Science in 1998. In 2007, he was awarded the Milutin Milankovic Medal by the European Geosciences Union.

WANG discovered the amplification effect of the South China Sea on environmental signals in the glacial cycle and the significant influence of the marginal sea of the Western Pacific Ocean on the evolution of China's land environment. As the chief scientist, he led the first ODP184 deep-sea scientific drilling in the South China Sea by an international deep-sea scientific drilling vessel, and obtained the best record of Late Cenozoic environmental evolution in the Western Pacific region. His representative works include Marine Micropaleontology of China , the South China Sea Since 150,000 Years Ago (Chinese), Major Pleistocene Stages in Carbon Perspective: The South China Sea Record and Its Global Comparison, etc. In 2000, he won the Second Prize of National Natural Science Award.

(7) XUE Yongqi

XUE Yongqi, a Chinese expert in infrared and remote sensing technology, was born in Zhangjiagang, Jiangsu Province in January 1937. He obtained his BSc from the Department of Physics of East China Normal University in 1959. He is currently a Research Professor of Shanghai Institute of Technical physics, Chinese Academy of Sciencesand a professor of Tongji University. He was elected as member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1999.

Main Work and Achievements:

During the four decades of his dedication to infrared acquisition and multispectral remote sensing technology, he developed infrared scanners, multispectral scanners, imaging spectrometers, hyper-spectral imaging systems, and provided several advanced remote sensing devices that laid the foundation for China’s operational airborne remote sensing system and promoted the application of remote sensing technology in China. Being the first in China to develop the three-dimension imaging remote sensing technology, he combined the scanning spectral imaging with laser scanning ranging and realized fast-forming digital elevation model and geo-reference images without ground control points, which is particularly suitable for beaches, and deserts and islands. where there are poor transport facilities. This is a new real-time and high effective remote sensing system.

(8) YAO Xi

YAO Xi, a Chinese materials scientist, is currently a professor of Xi'an Jiaotong University and Tongji University. He graduated from the Department of Electrical Engineering, Jiao Tong University in 1957. In 1982, he received hisPhD in solid state science from Pennsylvania State University. He was elected a fellow of the American Ceramic Society in 2001. In 1991, he elected member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

YAO’s research interests include dielectric materials and devices, ferroelectrics, piezoelectric/pyroelectric materials/devices, oxide and compound semiconductors and devices, functional nano composite materials and devices, and integrated ferroelectrics. He has published more than 500 refereed papers, authored or co-authored 7 books, and holds 12 patents in China, Singapore, and USA. He discovered the piezoelectric resonance phenomenon of ceramic grains in the study of the twin and polycrystalline interfaces, and the dielectric spectrum of polycrystalline aggregates with randomly distributed grain sizes and orientations was calculated using computer circuit simulation methods. The results are in good agreement with the experiments. After a systematic study of the polarization relaxation in ferroelectrics, he discovered a series of new phenomena such as microdomain-macrodomain transition, electric field-induced nanostructure adjustment, and superparaelectric state, which are of great significance for the development of smart materials.

(9) ZHENG Shiling

ZHENG Shiling is an internationally reputed architect. Currently, he serves as Director of the Committee for Strategic Development, Shanghai Urban Planning Commission; Director of the Academic Board of Tongji University. He was elected member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2001.

ZHENG has been engaged in combining design and architecture theories for more than 30 years in his architectural creations and practices and has been pursuing the academic value of creation activities. Also, by integrating academic thoughts into architecture teaching, he forms ground-breaking architecture teaching thoughts, establishes the theoretical framework for the Value System and Symbolism of Architecture, and lays fundamental theory for architectural criticism.

(10)ZHOU Xingming

ZHOU Xingming is a distinguished computer scientist. At present, he is a professor in the School of Computer Science and Technology, National Laboratory of Parallel and Distributed Processing, and Tongji University. In 1993, he was elected member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

From the early 1960s to the late 1970s, he participated in the development of transistor computers, integrated circuit computers, and million-scale subordinate mainframe computers. He was engaged in the overall scheme research, system logic design, circuit design and development, and system debugging. Professor ZHOU has made innovative work on the high temperature stability of germanium transistor circuits, anti-interference of TTL signal transmission, and fast division algorithms. From the late 1970s to 1992, he developed China's first supercomputer Galaxy I (chief of the main system), China's first all-digital real-time simulation computer Galaxy Simulation I (chief), and a supercomputer of parallel computing named Galaxy II(Chief Designer), China's first computer that is oriented towards scientific and engineering computing. He led the entire development process, and made innovative work in the overall plan, CPU structure, RAS technology plan, system interface protocol, etc., and overcame many technical difficulties. His research fields in recent years include high-performance computing, mobile computing, and microprocessor architecture.

3.2 Members of Chinese Academy of Engineering

(1) CHEN Jie

CHEN Jie, member of Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) (since 2017), IEEE Fellow (since 2018) and International Federation of Automatic Control (IFAC) Fellow (since 2019), currently serves as President of Tongji University since July 2018. Prof. Chen is a prestigious expert in control science and engineering and other related disciplines. His research interests include multi-index optimization and control of complex systems in dynamic environment and multi-agent coordination.

CHEN is Head of the State Key Laboratory of Intelligent Control and Decision of Complex Systems. The awards and titles that he won include the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, Distinguished Professor of Changjiang Scholars Program, academic leader of an innovation research group under the National Natural Science Foundation for China, leader of the innovation team of the Ministry of Education, chief expert of Project 973 (National Basic Research Program), state-level talent of New Century Talents Project of China, and National Excellent Scientist.

HEN currently serves as a member of the Control Science and Engineering Group of the Academic Degree Committee of the State Council, as well as the Science and Technology Committee of the Ministry of Education. He is vice chairman of the Chinese Association of Automation, vice chairman of the Chinese Institute of Command and Control, executive director of the Chinese Association of Artificial Intelligence, and serves on the Editorial Boards of several academic journals. He won the Second Prize of the National Natural Science Award as the first author, two Second Prizes of the State Science and Technology Award, four First Prizes at the provincial and ministerial level, and Science and Technology Progress Award of Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation in 2018.

(2) CUI Junzhi

CUI Junzhi is an expert in computational mathematics, computational mechanics and software engineering. At present, he is a researcher of Institute of Mathematics and System Science, Chinese Academy of Sciences and a professor of Tongji University. He graduated from Northwest Polytechnic University in 1962. He was elected member of Chinese Academy of Engineering in 1995.

CUI was engaged in the research of finite element methods in the early years, and developed the first universal finite element program for plane problems in China in early 1964, which solved the complex stress analysis of Liujiaxia Dam. In 1973, he revealed the correlation between the stress state in the contact body and the loading route, which effectively solve the complex structural stress analysis problems of Gongzui Dam. Since the 1980s, he has hosted and participated in the development of the "General Finite Element Program System (FEPS)", the National Key Project "Building Structure Design Software Package (BDP)", the National Natural Sciences Foundation of China project "Finite Element Method Software Environment", etc. With regard to the methodology of software development for science and engineering, he proposed an algorithm of self-adaptive organization. In the past two decades, in view of the performance prediction of composite materials and the analysis of their structures, he developed a high-order multi-scale analysis method that integrates macrostructures and fine-microstructures for integrated analysis of materials and structures. He was awarded Second Prize of the National Natural Science Award in 1981, 7 prizes at provincial or ministerial levels. He has authored and co-authored over 150 papers and published 3 books.

(3)GUO Chongqing

GUO Chongqing is an expert in mechanical manufacturing process and equipment, facility planning and design, and industrial development strategy. He is currently a professor of Tongji University. He graduated from Harbin University of Technology in 1957. He was elected member of Chinese Academy of Engineering in 1995.

GUO has long been engaged in design, consultation and research in strategy of industry development of engineering projects, and has also severed as the chief director for more than 30 national or ministerial-level key projects. He has been the Chief Designer for the reform of Shanghai Machine Tool Works, the first industrial project financed by World Bank, and presided over the research work on Work Bank financed Shenyang industry reform project assumed by Chinese engineering consulting institute, which made contributions to the technology development of Chinese industries. GUO is honored as Master in Engineering Design by Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development of the People’s Republic of China. His projects won one National Science and Technology Progress Award, five ministerial science and technology progress awards, one gold award and three silver awards of National Excellent Design.

(4) HOU Li’an

HOU Li’an, an expert in environmental engineering, is the director of the Institute of Logistics Science and Technology of the Rocket Army and a professor of Tongji University. In 2006, he obtained his PhD from the Institute of Chemical Defense. He was elected member of Chinese Academy of Engineering in 2009. He is one of the famous pioneers for the prevention and control technology against special pollution in China. During the basic research, project design and technical management in the environmental science and engineering for several decades, he initiated and successfully developed a set of advanced techniques and serial equipment to safeguard water security, the domestic sewage treatment for the scattered point source and air purification for human settlements. He has made several great breakthroughs and significantly creative achievements in past years. He has 31 patents and published more than 300 papers and six books.

He has won 1 First Prize, 3 Second Prizes and 2 Third Prizes of the National Science and Technology Progress Award, 26 science and technology progress awards and teaching achievement awards of the military and provincial and ministerial levels. He was awarded the First Class Military Merit once and the Third Class Military Merit four times. Enjoying special government subsidies, he has won the "Qiushi" Outstanding Youth Award of the China Association for Science and Technology, the 1st Outstanding Professional and Technical Talents Award of the PLA, the titles of National Advanced Worker for Science Popularization and the National Outstanding Scientific And Technological Worker.

(5) LI Tongbao

LI Tongbao, an expert in optics and metrology, was born in Wen County, Henan Province on October 17, 1942. In 1963, he graduated from Tongji University in applied physics. In the same year, he worked in the Optical ResearchSection of China Institute of Metrology in Beijing. From April to November 1980, hedidradiometric researchin the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) of the United States, during which hewon the Outstanding Visiting Researcher Award. From 1983 to May 1999, he served as researcher, Dean and Honorary Dean of National Institute of Measurement and Testing Technologyof China. He was elected academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering in 1994. He has been a professor and doctoral supervisor of Tongji University since June 1999.

LI has been engaged in the research of optical radiation measurement technology and standards. The weak light standard testing device developed by him proposed a new method for measuring extremely low transmittance, making it possible to measure the low light level illuminance of l0-6Lx with 5% uncertainty, which met the urgent needs of national defense such as night vision low light level devices and radioactive fluorescent materials at that time. He established a 500K-1000K full irradiation standard, improved the temperature measurement structure and measurement procedure of the radiation chamber, and significantly improved the quality of the blackbody radiator, which provided a technical basis for the detection of infrared guidance and scientific research and production of infrared weapon systems in China. He won the National Science Congress Award in 1978. The "Photometric Benchmark and Luminous Flux Sub-standard" project won the First Prize of 1985 National Science and Technology Progress Award. He headed the research project "Absolute Measurement Of 400-900nm Spectral Radiation Using Silicon Photodiode Self-Calibration Technology" and won the First Prize of National Scientific And Technological Progress in 1989. At present, he is engaged in the research of optical radiation measurement and acousto-optic technology, including sonoluminescence and sonofusion, and the realization of nanometer grating length standard by laser converging atoms. He established the first laboratory in China for developing nano-meter standards by using the method of laser standing wave field converging atoms. At present, he has achieved standard samples of 1/2 wavelength (213nm) and 2-dimensional nano-length with quality equivalent to that of NIST. These provide strong technical support for the rapid development of China's nanotechnology industry.

(6) LIANG Wenhao

LIANG Wenhao,a distinguished Chinese tunnel and underground engineering expert, is currently deputy director of the Academic Committee of the State Key Laboratory for Information Technology in Rail Transit Engineering. He served as deputy chief engineer of China Railway First Survey and Design Institute Group Co., Ltd., deputy chief engineer of China Railway Construction Co., Ltd. and director of Tunnel and Underground Engineering Committee of China Civil Engineering Society. He was elected member of Chinese Academy of Engineering in 2005.

LIANG has been engaged in professional and technical work for half a century, a pioneering figure that is still active at the forefront of tunnel and underground engineering construction in China. He has presided over the survey and design of dozens of railway tunnels such as Houyue Railway, Xikang Railway and Qinghai-Tibet Railway. He has also completed the planning, scheme research and design of a number of large and complex projects in the fields of highway, water conservancy and subway tunnels. He has made outstanding contributions in the fields of tunnel construction in long tunnels crossing mountains in complex mountain areas, high and cold plateaus, collapsible loess, sandstorm and other special geological conditions and TBM construction technology.

LIANG presided over the investigation and design work of the loess tunnel of Baolan Railway, Baozhong Railway, Shenyan Railway, shallow sand tunnel of Shenshuo Railway, Fenghuoshan tunnel in plateau permafrost region of Qinghai-Tibet Railway, Kunlun mountain tunnel and other tunnel projects with special geological conditions. (7)LU Yaoru

LU Yaoru, a distinguished engineering geologist, hydrogeologist and environmental geologist, is professor and doctoral supervisor of Tongji University, Honorary President of Guizhou Normal University, Professor of China University of Mining And Technology, member of Expert Committee of China National Committee for International Disaster Reduction, member of China Council for International Cooperation on Environment and Development, member of National Environmental Advisory Committee, director of International Research Centre on Karst (IRCK) under the auspices of UNESCO, joint research on urban environment and sustainable development of Ministry of Education. In 1950, he entered the Department of geology of Tsinghua University for undergraduate study, and in 1952, he was adjusted to the Department of hydrogeology and engineering geology of the newly established Beijing Institute of Geology (now China University of Geosciences). With scores of years of experience in scientific research and engineering practice of karst geology, Prof. LU established the systematic theory of karst development and engineering environmental effects, participated in practice and guided the investigation and research of water conservancy and hydropower, railways, mines and urban engineering. Because of his outstanding contribution to karst research, he has been honored as "Karst Lu" by the international academe.

Serving as chief investigator, he was responsible for the investigation, research and foundation treatment of large-scale projects such as water conservancy and hydropower hubs and long railway tunnels in the Yangtze River, Yellow River and Pearl River basins, achieving tremendous social and economic benefits. He put forward a new understanding of geological ecological environment, contributing to poverty alleviation and sustainable development in Southwest China. His research in geological disasters has provided for informed decision-making for disaster prevention. He once served as senior expert for large projects funded by China’s international aid initiatives. He has also lectured in Europe, the US, Hong Kong SAR and Chinese Taipei. He has won the National Science and Technology Congress Award, the Second Prize for Geological Science and Technology, a Second Prize for National Science and Technology Books, the Honorary Award of Li Siguang Geological Science Foundation, a Third Prize for Natural Science in Hebei Province, and the Academician Award for Special Contribution by the Hebei Provincial People's Government. (8) WU Zhiqiang

WU Zhiqiang, a distinguished expert in urban and rural planning and a reputed educator in engineering innovation, is the world-famous pioneer of urban and rural planning theory and engineering practice. He was elected member of Chinese Academy of Engineering in 2017.

XIANG Haifan, a distinguished Chinese bridge structuralist, has made outstanding achievement and multiple contributions to Bridge Engineering and Wind Engineering. At present, he is a senior member and honorary member of the International Association of bridge and Structural Engineering (IABSE) (since he was vice chairman of IABSE in 2001-2009), honorary president of the Bridge and Structural Engineering Branch of the Chinese Civil Engineering Society, and chief advisor of the Chinese Wind Engineering Society. In 1955, he graduated from Tongji University with a bachelor's degree in bridge and tunnel engineering, and in 1958, he graduated from Tongji University with a master's degree in bridge engineering. Since 2007 he is Emeritus Professor of Tongji University and was the first Chairman of Department of Bridge Engineering, the founding Dean of the College of Civil Engineering, and the Director of the State Key Laboratory for Disaster Reduction in Civil Engineering. He was elected member of Chinese Academy of Engineering in 1995.

XIANGwas awarded the title of the National Outstanding Expert by the State Council of China in 1986. He has received more than 20 national awards and several international awards including Honorary Membership of IABSE, the Anton Tedesko Medal of the IABSE Foundation for the Advancement of Structural Engineering. He has won First Prize and Second Prizes of National Science and Technology Progress Award, a Second Prize and a Fourth Prize of National Natural Science Award, Anton Tedesco Medal and IABSE Merit of International Association of Bridge and Structural Engineering, ASCE Robert H. (10) XIAO Xuwen

XIAO Xuwen, a distinguished Chinese expert in construction technology, the chief expert of CSCEC, vice president of China Construction Industry Association, standing deputy director of construction engineering technical expert committee of China Construction Industry Association, director of Expert Committee and standing vice president of green construction and construction branch of China Construction Industry Association. His past industrial experiences include serving as president of the Design Institute of China Construction Eighth Engineering Division, chief engineer of China Construction Eighth Engineering Division and general manager of Science and Technology Department of China Construction Corporation. He graduated from the Department of Civil Engineering of Tsinghua University in 1977, and obtained his Master of Business Administration in Tongji University. XIAO presided over and participated in the design and construction of at least 100 projects, and many projects won Lu Ban Award and Zhan Tianyou Award. (11) ZHONG Zhihua

ZHONG Zhihua, a distinguished Chinese vehicle engineering specialist,served as President of Tongji University from 2016 to 2018. He was elected member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering in 2005.

ZHONG was a member of the 9th National People's Congress and 11th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference. He served as a member of the expert committee in the field of "advanced manufacturing and automation technology" of the national "Tenth Five Year" 863 plan, a panelist of the Discipline Evaluation Panel of the AcademicDegreeCommittee of the State Council and member of the Engineering Department of the Science and Technology Committee of the Ministry of Education. At present, he is a member of the Party group and vice president of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. In 1988, he obtained his PhD in engineering from Linköping University, Sweden.

ZHONG has been engaged in the research and application of automobile design and manufacturing technology. His main research fields are automobile collision safety technology, body stamping technology and modular lightweight automobile technology. He has presided over a number of national projects, international cooperation projects and major research and development projects of domestic and multinational corporations, including theoretical and methodological researches, research and development of engineering software, research and development of manufacturing processes and equipment and research and development of new products. He put forward many new theories and methods and developed many new technologies, new equipment and new products. Prof. ZHONG has published over 120 papers and three books. His papers included in SCI have been cited for 200-odd times.
