Oba is derived from “oh-bah-koh-te” (오바코트) – a Korean phonetic translation of the English word ‘overcoat’ shortened to a trendy colloquialism, and conceived for those with a compulsion for coats.
The lecturer Gil Palacios now works as designer for Oba.
Palacios studied at the prestigious Fashion Institute of Technology in 2012. Upon graduating, Palacios spent a year working for Versace in sales before being hired as a design assistant by Mr. Alfred Fiandaca and thus commencing his design career.
In 2010, Palacios was hired by the luxury Chinese label Eve NY, holders of the Badgley Mischka license for Asia, and relocated to Shanghai to work as design director for Eve NY and consult on the development of Badgley Mischka for Mainland China.
Palacios returned to New York City in 2012, where he once again joined Fiandaca designing as the label expanded into ready-to-wear, eventually being named Creative Director for the brand.
In 2013, he launched his eponymous label Palacios, focused on contemporary couture for the modern woman. In Spring 2014 Palacios returned to Shanghai to design for Oba.
