On November 2nd, VEX China National Championship 2018 organized by Shanghai Jiao Tong University with support from the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission was held at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Two teams from Tongji University supervised by YU Youling and ZHOU Wei, teachers from the School of Electronics and Information Engineering, won the highest award of Excellence Award in addition to an Energy Award and a Robot Skills Finalist award.

This competition had five categories from primary school to university. More than two thousand people in over 200 teams from universities and institutes including Tongji University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Xi'an Jiao Tong University participated in the competition. Detailed tasks were officially released in May. After six months of intense preparations, TJU1 and TJU2, two teams of 27 students from the School of Electronics and Information Engineering, participated in the championship on behalf of Tongji University. After three days of competition, the two teams came second and fourth respectively in the VEX Robot Skills Challenge. In the Teamwork Challenge, they entered the quarterfinals with the second and sixth places respectively. The two teams won an Energy Award and the Excellence Award as a result of their good teamwork, high-quality engineering log book and their comprehensive performances in both the Robot Skills Challenge and the Tournament Championship. Eventually, both teams were qualified for the US VEX World Championship in April 2019.
