The 2018 Clinical Skills Competition for Medicine Students in Shanghai organized by Shanghai Municipal Education Commission, was hosted by the School of Medicine of Tongji University from December 8th to 9th. There were twenty-four teams from eighteen affiliated hospitals of Fudan University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Tongji University and the Second Military Medical University. A total of 96 competitors gathered at Tongji University to demonstrate their good command of clinical skills. Nearly 100 spectators from universities and affiliated hospitals around China watched the competition through live broadcasts.

The competition covered different specialties including internal medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, emergency department, ophthalmology, otolaryngology, dermatology and nursing. It showcased not only students’ basic skills but also their clinical thinking, decision-making, teamwork and communication skills.



There were eight sites for the preliminary competition which had a total of thirteen operations and two clinical thinking assessments. After a day of intense competition, ten teams stood out and entered the semi-finals the next morning. The semi-final adopted a "track system": there were three stations on each track and all teams completed the skill test in turn. The competitors were all highly focused on clinical operations in an attempt to completing the task within as little time as possible. In the end, four teams entered the finals. They completed the final test of the competition with a clear mind, skilled operation and tacit teamwork. After two days of fierce competitions, Changhai Hospital affiliated to Second Military Medical University won the Special Award. The 1st team from Renji Hospital affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University, the 2nd team from Huashan Hospital affiliated to Fudan University, and Tongji Hospital affiliated to Tongji University were awarded a first prize respectively.
