On the evening of January 1st, Tongji New Year Concert 2019 was held at the Shanghai Concert Hall where a ceremony for the establishment of “Tongji University Yunlong Development Fund” was organized concurrently. A total of more than 1,000 people attended the concert, including university leaders, former university leaders, alumni, teachers and students.
Tongji University has been twinned with Yunlong County to help with its growing out of poverty for a long time. The launch of “Yunlong Development Fund” coincided with “Tongji University New Year Concert 2019” so that the income from the concert tickets would be used as the initial fund in support of education, medical care, industrial development and infrastructure construction in Yunlong County of Dali, Yunnan Province. Since December 10th, 2018 when donations for Yunlong County were initiated, over 500,000 yuan arrived within ten days. An online donation platform of “Yunlong Development Fund” was established for alumni, teachers and students to make contributions to the fund. The fund welcomes donations from people from all walks of life.
Vienna Johann Strauss Orchestra from Austria played the classical Waltz at the concert at invitation. The Orchestra was founded in 1824 in Vienna, music capital of the world, and is a world leading orchestra. During the concert, student chorus from College of Arts and Media, Tongji University performed two classical songs of Edelweiss and Song of the Yangtze River in collaboration of the Orchestra, which demonstrated artistic style of Tongji students.
