The establishment of Xiongan New Area is part of measures taken by the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee to advance the coordinated development of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region. The historic project of constructing Xiongan New Area is of far-reaching historical significance to help phase out functions from Beijing that are not related to the capital, explore a new model of optimized development in dense-populated areas, restructure the urban layout in Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, and transform the region into a new growth pole for quality development and improved economic system.
Since April 28th, 2017 when both Tongji Architecture Design Group and Shanghai Tongji Urban Planning & Design Institute (TJUPDI) started to participate in the planning of Xiongan New Area, more than 70 people have been engaged in the project. In December 2017, Xiongan Intelligent Planning & Design Research Institute was set up to coordinate the construction of Xiongan New Area in planning, transportation, municipal administration and design.
On January 25th, 2019, Xiongan New Area CPC Working Committee and Administrative Committee sent a letter of gratitude to Tongji University in recognition of its strong support in the planning of Xiongan New Area. The letter particularly mentioned ZHANG Hao and WU Guan who were assigned to work in Xiongan New Area Planning & Design Research Center by TJUPDI, a leading planning and design compnay in China with a high sense of responsibility. This was the third letter of gratitude from Xiongan New Area to Tongji University. The first letter from the Administrative Committee of Xiongan New Area arrived in September 2017 in recognition of the professional support provided by TJUPDI for its constructing an innovative simulation work camp. In October 2018, the second letter reached TJUPDI as one of the important participants in the construction of a digital planning platform for the new area, for its providing rich experience and advanced technology in the synchronized planning and construction of a physical city and a digital city in Xiongan New Area and for its contribution to transform Xiongan New Area into a green, intelligent, innovative and eco-city and a national demonstration area of quality development.
