About when to come back to the university

Q:When is the estimated time we can go back? Is it possible to come back to China in May or June?
A:  Please wait for further notice from the official authority and the university.

Q:Is it possible for the students who are not in China go back with a very urgent reason? They are willing to do quarantine and stuff, and most of them are living off campus. Is it possible for them by getting a permission from their faculty coordinator?
A: Staying where you are is the best and the safest way to protect yourself and reduce transmission. Avoid travelling please.

Q:In China, but not in Shanghai can I go back?
A: Sorry, you can’t. Please do not travel unless a further notice is issued.

Q:What about students who are in Shanghai, can they return to their university since they are inside Shanghai?
A: Sorry, they can’t. Students are not allowed to return to school unless a further notice is made.

Q:What happens if our country get lockdown and we cannot going back on time as the opening date? Is there any option like: take a leave (请假条)or other else?
A: It depends on the further situation. If you cannot return to school because your country is locked down, you can choose to apply for suspension at that time.

Q:Can Tongji reconsider its decision for all the students stuck out of their home country, in a “ safe ” country, to come back earlier in Shanghai?
A: Now there is NO information about returning. The office will keep everyone informed through e-mail, WeChat Official Account and the website. All the international students outside China should not return to the university or China before receiving back-to-university notice. Please understand the objective of the above suggestions and regulations is for the prevention and control of the covid-19 and for the safety and health of all the students and staff.

About application and registration

Q:Because HSK test in Thailand this month and next month has been canceled because of corona virus so I don't have hsk4 score to apply for next semester, and Tongji university only let us apply until 15 May 2020 how about extend for apply?
A: If the official HSK report cannot be provided by the application deadline because of the epidemic impact, applicants may upload the screenshot of score from the official website www.chinesetest.cn instead. If the applicant cannot attend the HSK for now, you can upload your test permit or relevant documents and the official HSK report should be received before the deadline through e-mail.

Q:I am a new international student. I was supposed to enroll for the beginner language class. I was advised by one teacher from a class that my course is supposed to commence in a later date. I will have on campus classes and my course hasn’t commenced yet. please confirm if it’s correct. if correct, please assist me to register ASAP, as I will have to send my passport to my country to renew as it’s expiring soon. thank you.
A: Yes,it’s correct. The university is still closed now. The specific semester start time will be notified later. So we cannot assist you to register.

About on-line courses

Q:I can’t attend online class because of the time difference, what can I do?
A: You can watch the video playback of online courses. Please contact your school for detailed information.

Q:How the student can take a semester break? Some students very concern about this since the time difference makes it difficult for them to join the e-lesson. Also, for students who are currently writing thesis, it’s hard to get the data from their country. But those students also concern, if they take a semester break, is it possible for them to get their scholarship move to the next semester?
A: Students can apply to school for suspension. Scholarship will be suspended during this period and will be resumed after the resumption. (The total time of the scholarship will not exceed the professional academic time)Please note that students who will graduate in July can only apply for a delayed graduation, not suspension. Doctoral program student can apply for a delayed graduation and a one-year extension of the scholarship and the procedures will be updated by our office later, but this do not apply to undergraduate and graduate students. If an undergraduate or graduate student apply for a delayed graduation, they can only continue as a self-financed student.

Q:I am currently in the second semester of Chinese language studies to prepare for HSK4 and my master studies starting in Sep. 2020. Can I suspend my studies for this semester, pass HSK4 by myself and start study my master in Sep. 2020?
A: You can attend online courses. If you suspend your study for this semester, you need to start all over.

Q:What about the last year of PhD students? we just need to send our thesis papers and that’s all?
A: Please contact your supervisor.

Q:In the last meeting it was mentioned that we can use MOOC for the 16 academic lectures. We still haven’t received any information regarding those lectures?
A: Please contact your supervisor.

Q:The double degree student that for technical reason can’t finish them thesis, can they came back when this “problem” will finish and finished them thesis? Are you sure that the visa problem will be resolved? Can you organize new blind review in the next semester?
A: Please contact your school and your supervisor.

Q:Many universities students can apply for gap year, stop the scholarship for one or two semester and back to continue later. Tongji will have this option for students?
A: You can apply for the suspension. Please check with your supervisor.

Q:How to extend scholarship for PHD Students?
A: Please pay attention to our notice about fees.

Q:I haven't pay school fee, can I still do the online class?  Do I need to pay full price since the class is online?
A: You must pay full tuition fee according to the financial regulations. The changes, if any, will be informed in time.

Q:Can we get the stipend money when we are not at school for now?
A: After returning to school, you will get your stipend money for these months if you are a scholarship student.

Q:If I graduate this year, and I go back to Shanghai after my graduation, can I still get my stipend money?
A: Stipend money will be given if you are still in the academic period at that time.

Q:Is off campus stipend reduced for Shanghai government scholarship during epidemic?
A: The standard remains unchanged.

Q:I have a question about the rent of our dorms. Since we are not allowed to enter China, do we have to pay our dorm? I think it is not right to pay the rent.
A: Please understand that more than one student are involved in similar situation. There might be universal policy to deal with it. It is suggested you contact the dorm management your school if you have financial problem in paying the rent.

Q:I have a question for dormitory fees and its’ extension, before I leave I paid room fee for 3 month, until end of April so will it be extended?
A: Please contact the dorm management or report to your school. It evolves into a problem just because of the covid-19 epidemic. There will be universal policy.

Q:How will the suspended Chinese government scholarship be repaid in case we will not be able to return to China till the very end of our studies in China (end of July)?
A: Please wait for the further notice.

Q:If I take semester break, can I pay school tuition fee / move my scholarship to next semester?
A: Yes, you can. Make sure the voucher is well kept.

Q:If my apartment on Campus is sponsored by a scholarship but I am abroad until my visa expires… what should I do?
A: We will notice students aboard how to get your study visa when university officially starts.

Q:Read an article that Chinese Government intends to give all foreigners 700 dollars. is it true? If true, who and who benefits?
A: This information is not true. Please get information through official channels and authorities.


About visas

Q:Visa is expire soon, What should I do?
My visa asks me to come to China before the end of April. What should I do?
A:  Students aboard will be informed about how to get the new study visa when university officially starts.

Q:I'm in Shanghai, can I apply for internship permission?
What about the student that need to do an internship in China for the double degree students?I'm just asking for a visa change to permit to work, in order to work from home.
A: ISO will be open to accept internship one week after University officially starts.

Q:What about visa Policy regarding the next winter Semester? So how or if new visa is allowed for?
A: Please refer to Policy of Shanghai administration of entry and exit at that time. About campus safety and others

Q:When is the mobility ban/ restriction will be withdrawn?
A: Please wait for the further notice of the university.

Q:Will all the students coming from abroad be quarantined for 14 days in Shanghai?
A: For now all the passengers of international flights must go through Shanghai Municipal Government’s quarantine check and meet the requirements about COVID-19 prevention and control.
