Since the Spring Festival 2020, the outbreak of COVID-19 has exposed people of Tongji University to critical tests, affecting a number of Tongji students who are on exchange programs overseas or planned to start their exchange overseas this semester. The following tips are provided in the hope that graduate students and their supervisors work together to overcome the difficulties during this special time.

1. Student supervisors are expected to show concern for your graduate students who are on exchange programs overseas by keeping close contact with them and paying attention to their physical and mental health in addition to their academic progress. The supervisors will help your graduate students with their study and research plans, and follow up with their study and research to solve their problems and to ensure the learning effectiveness through online means.

2. Students who are staying overseas should remain calm and hold an objective attitude towards the epidemic. Fighting the epidemic together with local students and teachers is be an opportunity to enhance mutual understanding and friendship, and to further cross-cultural communication. For your personal safety and health, be sure to take protective measures, reduce travel and minimize mobility. At the same time, while following closely the local epidemic situation updates, and prevention and control measures, please pay attention to the official information issued by the Wechat official accounts of Safe Study Abroad of the Ministry of Education and Consular Express and information from the Chinese embassy and consulates in the local country to keep pace with the latest epidemic prevention and control development as well as policy updates, and to cooperate with relevant work.

3. Online teaching for graduate students have been well under way since it started on March 2. Both Chinese and international teachers have made careful preparations for online teaching on cloud platforms such as Zoom, Superstar and Wisdom Tree along with WeChat groups, QQ groups, DING and Canvas where they can both teach and organize online group discussions and class activities to minimize the impact of the epidemic on teaching and maximize the students learning effectiveness. Students are expected to take the responsibility of attending the online class and completing course tasks on time.

4.Students who are staying overseas should maintain close contact with your supervisors through online means. Please report your current situation to and seek guidance from your supervisors while enhancing your abilities of study, research and self-management.

5. Students who wish to return to China sooner than planned due to completion of the exchange program or for some special reason, please assess the travel risks, and take the visa and the documents approved for your overseas exchange program into consideration. Make sure to start your return trip only after you have obtained approval following your report to your supervisor, your tutor, and your school about your current personal physical condition, travel experience, and itinerary of your return trip. Meanwhile, it is necessary to understand the detailed epidemic prevention and control measures in your hometown, and cooperate with the local authorities in taking prevention and control measures. Please comply strictly with the notices issued by the Ministry of Education and by the University on return to school; and do not return to school until you have received a formal notice.

6. Students who had planned to go abroad for exchange are expected to communicate with your supervisor and fully consider the connection between academic study at your home university and overseas exchange program.
