Tongji and Italy Devote to Environmental Protecting Program

On the afternoon of April 20th, Tongji president Wan Gang and Mr. Clini, minister of Italian Ministry of Environment, Land and Resources, signed cooperative agreement of establishing the China-Italy Sustainable City Mobility Research Center. Italian general consul, principals from College of Automobile Engineering, College of Environment Engineering, and College of Traffic and Transportation Engineering, attended the signing ceremony.

According to the agreement, China and Italy will develop ten light electric fuel injection motors that meet the Europe III discharge standard in the future 18 months. Researchers will further develop multi-power two-wheel motorbikes and four-wheel mini autos that protect environment and save energy. Besides, the two parts will also cooperate in several Expo projects, such as Chongming Ecological Island Planning, the development of Shanghai Air Pollution Source Monitoring Management System, the innovation study of Shanghai traffic management, research and development of renewable energy technology.

On the same day, Tongji University, Italian Ministry of Land and Resources (IMLR), and Venice International College signed a cooperative agreement to improve environmental protection education on both universities funded by IMLR and academic communication. According to the agreement, IMLR will provide 27 scholarships for teachers and students of College of Environmental Engineering, supporting them to study in Venice International College about the sustainable development for half a year.

On November 21st, 2005, Tongji and IMLR signed a memorandum about the establishment of Italy’s first project in China based on gas turbine technology.
