China Translation Industry Forum Held In Tongji

May 29, 2006

On May 28thand 29th, over 200 representatives from domestic and foreign translation companies got together in the lecture hall of College of Civil Engineering, attending the “International Translation Industry Forum in China 2006” , jointly sponsored Translators Association of China (TAC)and Tongji University. It is the first large-scale international forum in translation industry in China. President Wan Gang attended the opening ceremony and delivered welcome speeches, while Sheryl Hinkkanen, general secretary of International Federation of Translators, and Liu Xiliang, head of TCA delivered theme speeches.

Themed on “The Competitive Ability and Industrialization”, this forum sets up two subordinated forums named “Translation Service and Technology” and “Translation Education, Training and Publication”, apart from the main forum. Expects pointed out that output value of Chinese translation market in 2003 was RMB 11 billion, while that in 2005 may break RMB 20 billion. But we should be clear that the translation market as a new industry is short of effective industry guide and uniformed monitoring, resulting in the variation of translators’ qualification and low-quality translation. To improved an ordered development of this industry, TAC will draw and perfect relative industry standards and national standards, set up translation appraisal committee, construct entry level and appraisal mechanism for translators and organizations.

On the closing ceremony, representatives signed on “Chinese Trasnaltion Industry-Shanghai Declare”. The logo for 18thInternational Translation Conference in 2008 sponsored by China for the first time was also publicized.
