Tongji University will celebrate its 100thbirthday on May 20th, 2007. From now on till late May, Tongji will have a series of activities to celebrate its birthday. On the evening of Jan.5th, being invited, Shanghai symphony orchestra came to the great hall and gave all the teachers and students a wonderful New Year symphony concert. This concert is the prologue of all the celebration activities. Xueping Gong, the chairman of Standing Committee of Shanghai Municipal People's Congress attended the concert. He, together with Mengchao Wu, Jialun Zhou and Gang Wan get the series of celebration activities started.
Before the starting ceremony, Tongji held the first press conference for the celebration of its birthday. The conference introduced the spirit and ideas of the celebration preparation and the series of activities that are going to be held to the central government and some of the Shanghai press.
Jialun Zhou, the chairman of the school party committee and the president Gang Wan expressed their opinion that Tongji 100thbirthday is a milestone in its history. To celebrate it successfully has some special meanings. The celebration preparation is also a good opportunity, not only can we understand more about Tongji history and its spirit, but also we can lay a solid foundation for next 100 years or more years’ of development. During the process of the celebration preparation, we will combine preparation work with development in the long run. We will take the opportunity as a chance of summarizing teaching experience; a chance of seeking advanced development and adjusting all the resources; a chance of promoting new progress in every aspect. According to the requirement of constructing harmonious society and new country, we will try our best to contribute more in talents training, scientific research, social service and international exchange to our country and regional economic and social development.
According to the above spirit, during the celebration preparation, our school will hold many activities in accordance to time and period so as to sort out the history, spirit of Tongji, to demonstrate our achievements in scientific research and teaching and to renew the relationship between schoolmates. The specific activities include: holding the international city development forum; constructing the school history building; publishing books; remembering Mr. Guohao Li; exposition of achievements in teaching and scientific research; undertaking the dragon boat race of Taiwan and mainland, and among four regions; undertaking the “flowers in May” --- arts performances of university students in the whole country; hosting “long live youth” celebration party; and so on.
