On the occasion of forthcoming Tong Ji Centennial, the publication ceremony of “Mr. Li Guohao and Tong Ji University” and “Wisdom and Affection-Picture Biography of Mr. Li Guohao” was held in our university, which marked as the beginning of series of memorial activities of Mr li’s death.
As a distinguished civil engineering expert, bridge structural mechanics expert, educator, academician of both Chinese Academy of Science and Engineering, Mr, Li was the former President and honorary Principal of Tong Ji University, Chairman of Shanghai People’s Political Consultative Committee, the Chairman of Shanghai Science Committee. He passed away on February 23th, 2005.
As we all know, Tong Ji spirit can be summarized in four aspects, namely, patriotism, togetherness, struggling and preciseness. Judging the life experience of Mr. Li, we may find that he set a model in all aspects.
Prof. Li was a patriot and a famous social activist. In 1940s, he enjoyed a high reputation in international bridge academic world. However, he refused the invitation of his supervisor and returned to motherland. He devoted his energy and soul into international technology, education and cultural communication, especially in increasing mutual understanding between China and Germany. Because of his great contribution, he was awarded GCH.
Prof. Li was an outstanding educator. As the President of Tong Ji University, he put much emphasis on international corporation and communication and also humanities development. Under his direction and leading, Tong Ji accomplished “two transformations”, and established two centers of teaching and research.
Furthermore, Prof. Li was a distinguished strategy scientist. In many landmark constructions, such as Nanpu Bridge, Humen Bridge, Baosteel Construction, he made indelible contribution, and was awarded international bridge and construction achievement prize.
In May, “guohao forum”, one of the important parts of memorial activities, will open. Many experts and scholars will be invited to give lectures.
