The 2nd Sino- German Non-summer School Held in Tongji

The opening ceremony of the 2nd Sino-German Non-summer School was held in Sino-French Center in the morning of August 20th. The vice-president of Tongji Prof. Zhao Jianfu and the Prof. Subklew from German Juelich Research Institute delivered welcome speeches. The opening speeches were given by Academician from Tongji Prof. Wang Pinxian and Dr. Friedhelm Schroeder from German Research Center.

Centered on “water resource management” and lasted for 10 days, this Non-summer school included nearly 20 theme speeches and 5 first-hand investigations. The attendants who are doctoral candidates majored in environment research from Africa, Germany and China were required to listen to lectures on the water quality and water ecosystem in Yangtze Valley, the existing problems and corresponding solutions, the notion, technology and methods of water resource management. During the first-hand investigation, the students visited Shanghai Yang Shupu Water Treatment Station, Shi Dongkou Wastewater Treatment Plant, Meng Qing Garden and Chongming Island to get an overall understanding of existing water management system in Shanghai.

The three-year “Sino- German Non-summer School Program” was co-launched by the former president of Tongji Prof. Wan Gang, and the Chairman of German Juelich Research Institute Prof. Joachim Treusch in the year of 2005. it is designed to enhance the communication in the field of water resource management and water environment among young scholars between developing and developed countries. The third Non- summer School will be held in Nairobi University in Africa.
