The signing and inauguration ceremony of Bayer-Tongji Chair for Sustainable Development was held on Oct. 15. According to the agreement, Bayer will donate 1,000,000 dollars to establish Teaching Chair to subsidize masters to study environment for Sustainable Development. The Chair is one of the components of Bayer global education and environment programs, which will focus on enhancing the education, research and policy making in environment fields in China.


It is introduced that Bayer and Tongji University subscribed the Cooperation-Memorandum at Bayer’s headquarters in Leverkusen on March 20th, 2006, to promote the studies and education on environment for sustainable development of the Asia-Pacific region including China. The Chair consists of three parts: foundation professorship, scholarship for foreign and Chinese students, and projects for the investigation and promotion of sustainable development in China.
Functions and obligations of the professorship: Research projects in the field of Sustainable development, together with consultation on Environment and Environmental safety issues for interested public groups; lectures and seminars; establishment of network for the effective exploration of professorial activities.
Scholarship: Each year, the Steering committee shall award three scholarships to outstanding students at IESD of Tongji. The object of the scholarships is to fund a limited period of study in the field of “Environmental protection” and “Sustainable development” at internationally renowned universities.
Research projects: Projects for the investigation and promotion of sustainable development in china may be conducted by the endowed chair; all contracting parties shall be entitled to submit project proposals to the Steering Committee for evaluation and adoption.
