November 25, 2007

To enhance the environmental education in China, Dr. Klaus Toepfer, the former UN Under-Secretary-General donated 1 million RMB to set up environmental scholarship to provide financial support to Chinese undergraduates and postgraduates. The Scholarship launching ceremony was held on Nov. 19th.

Prof. Li Yongsheng, the Executive Vice-President expressed sincere thanks for Teopfer’s deep concern and great contribution to the development of environment education of the University. In Toepfer’s speech, he held the view that the human being was the center of sustainable development, and to obtain a bright future, humans should make joint efforts. By the end of 2050, the world population will increase to 8.5 billion; therefore the young generation should try to find a better way to provide adequate resource to the development of human beings. “To know a country well”, Toepfer said, “the best way is to study in that country. And I am pleased to see so many international students all over the world to study on Tongji Campus, and a great number of students from Tongji University are willing to go abroad. Only in this way we may get a better understanding and promote future cooperation.”

A press conference was held after the launching ceremony. Journalists and students discussed many questions related to the Scholarship together with Dr. Teopfer.
