Minister of BMBF Visited Tongji Accompanied by Minister Wan Gang of Science and Technology

On the morning of April 17th, Ms. Schavan, Minister of German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), who came to China for the first time, made a special visit to Tongji University accompanied by Minister Wan Gang of Science and Technology. Zhou Jialun, Secretary of University Party Committee, President Pei Gang, Executive Vice-President Li Yongsheng and President’s Assistant Yu Zhuoping met Ms. Schavan and her delegation. Ms. Schavan, Wang Gang, Zhou jialun and Pei Gang attended the signing ceremony of co-establishing Tongji-Siemens CKI agreement and the founding ceremony of Siemens CKI.

Ms. Schavan and Wan Gang came to the Multiple-use Building. There parked a hydrogen fuel cell car with the Volkswagen cover. This was one of the 20 fuel cell cars that would put into demonstration running at Beijing Olympics this year. After listening to the introduction of the environmental protection and energy saving car, Ms. Schavan inquired about the industrialization of the car. In the hall, she also visited the construction achievements we had obtained on building a resource-efficient campus and some energy-saving projects.

At the assembly room of Sino-German College, Ms. Schavan listened to the report about the developing situation of Sino-German College done by principles of the college. She said se was glad to see the success of the two cooperative projects, which laid a solid foundation for sustainable development in the future. She hoped to further expand the cooperative fields between the two parties and expressed that the cooperation would obtain supports from German Federal Ministry of Education and Research continuously. After the meeting, Ms. Schavan gave a lecture namedElites’ Responsibilities in International Environmentfor students in Sino-German College and answered their questions. She said that elites were different from talents of general conception. They cared the benefits not only of themselves, their own areas and nations but also of the whole world. They should take the great responsibilities and missions in the international environment. She encouraged the students to work harder and make contribution for the cultural exchange and scientific cooperation between China and Germany.

After the lecture, Ms. Schavan and Wang Gang went to the great hall on the first floor and witnessed the signing ceremony of theIntendedAgreement of Combining Sino-German College and Sino-German Engineering Collegemade by Tongji University, German Federal Ministry of Education and Research and German Academic Exchange Center (DAAD). Pei Gang, Mr. Christoph Ehrenberg, director of High Education Department, BMBF and Mr. Max Huber, vice-president of DAAD signed the agreement represent the three parties respectively. It was introduced that, the combination of the two colleges was aimed at integrating resources and assembling powers so as to develop the synergistic effect.
