On May 12th, a 7.8- magnitude earthquake struck Wenchuan Area of Sichuan Province at 14:28 pm. After the earthquake, students in Tongji left comments on the BBS of our university in succession. They paid close attention to the situation of the disaster, and cared about the disaster area in order to provide assistance for people there.
Confronted with the serious natural disaster, the warmth was pervaded and the strength was transferred. On the web pages of BBS.TONGJI.EDU.CN and BBS.TONGJI.NET,Red Cross Society of China Account for disaster Relief and Hotlinewas reprinted and set on top. Our students left messages one after another to show their concern about the situation of the disaster and pray for the people affected. Some students wrote, “I was in deep sorrow and hoped people there were all right.” ”Bless the Southwest, and bless people there.” “Bless the people who were suffering from the disaster.” Some expressed they would do their parts to help people in the disaster area. Others expressed we should pull together in times of trouble and give mutual help and protection to resist the disaster together.
After the earthquake, the university leaders attach high attention to it. They organized related departments to discuss the countermeasures. Department of Students Affairs investigated the situation of students from Sichuan Province and learned about the students who were afflicted by this disaster so as to comfort them in time on the evening of 12th. Related departments of the University would keep in touch with the 1003 students from Sichuan and Chongqing and would set up special subsidy for them.
When disaster struck, help came from all sides. Teachers and students of Tongji were in action. Everybody had one common desire, which was to do our parts for the people afflicted with every conceivable means.
The Students Union put forward the proposal to all the students calling us to care about the disaster area and provide assistance for people there in all kinds of means. Red Cross Society of the University discussed the plan and program for the next measures to help the disaster area with related departments.
After the disaster, doctors in the affiliated hospital of the University took action immediately. They volunteered to leave for the disaster area to help people there. Doctors in Affiliated Tongji Hospital, Affiliated No.10 People Hospital and Affiliated East Hospital asked voluntarily in succession to the front line of disaster-relief to provide medical assistance. Affiliated Tongji Hospital stated, “While people in Sichuan disaster area were in great threat and our country was in difficulty, we come forward to perform our vacation as medical personnel and devote ourselves into the rescuing work as quickly as possible. ” Affiliated No.10 People Hospital declared, “We had obligatory medical rescue responsibilities in front of the sudden serious disaster. We should do our bits as medical personnel for the afflicted people and were prepared to go to the disaster area at any time. ” They have already organized a emergency medical rescuing team. And so did the Affiliated East Hospital. They have prepared the medical equipments and recourses and demanded to go to the disaster area on receiving the order.
Tongji Alumni also took actions actively. Mr. Chen Jingwei, director of the University Board donated 2 million Hong Kong dollars through Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in Hong Kong.
