Recently, the University President Pei Gang met Dr. Klaus Toepfer, the former Director-General of UNEP. They exchanged ideas about energy conservation, environmental protection, development of colleges and universities and international exchange, etc. Dr. Toepfer came to China to attend the World Urban Forum held by the UN-Habit in Nanjing. He would give lessons for a week to 30 postgraduate students majoring in environmental management and sustainable development from UNEP-Tongji Institute of Environment forSustainableDevelopment (IESD).
As a chair professor of IESD, Dr. Toepfer had given selfless assistance ever since a long time ago for Tongji’s development in the field of environment andsustainabledevelopment. In November 2007, he donated one million yuan as the initial founds of environmental scholarships to subsidized undergraduate and postgraduate students and promote environmental education in China.
