Zhou Jialun Keynoted Opening Ceremony of Sino-German Science Education Year

On March 30th, invited by GermanEducation and Research MinistryandFreie UniversitätBerlin, Zhou Jialun, Director of Tongji University Administration Council attended the opening ceremony of 2009/10 Sino-German Science Education Year inFreie UniversitätBerlin. He made the keynote speech titledChina’s Strength in Research and Educationon the ceremony.

In his speech, Zhou said Chinese universities and research institutes played a leading role in Production-study-research cooperation as the subject of knowledge innovation and creative talents cultivation base. He appraised Chinese universities as propellant of economic development and builder of social innovative culture.TakingTognjiUniversityas an example, Zhou introduced our developing strategies to realize the linkage development of university campuses, technology parks and public communities and finally serve for regional development. The strategies were integrating disciplines that were close in space and associated in function, and building two discipline groups that were international academic frontier.TongjiUniversityprovided intellectual support for Shanghai 2010 World Expo and Chongming ecological island program. We also made contribution for building the harmonious city and energy conservation and emission reduction. At last, Zhou introduced the commemorative activity Tongji would hold on 100th death anniversary of Mr.Paulun, the wise forerunner. Through this activity, Tongji would strengthen communication and cooperation with German universities.

It was learned that, on the opening ceremony of 2009/10 Sino-German Science Education Year inFreie UniversitätBerlin, Wang Gang, Minister of Science and Technology andAnnette Schavan,Minister of Education andResearch,Germanyproposed to promote and reinforce high-level cooperation betweenChinaandGermanyon education and scientific research. On the opening ceremony, MinisterSchavan, Minister Wang Gang, Chen Xiaoya, vice-Minister of Education,Chinaand Prof.Lenzen, President ofFreie UniversitätBerlinmade speech of congratulation in succession. Presidents and vice-presidents of a dozen German and Chinese universities attended the ceremony.
