From 17thto 20thof March, a voluntary blood donation activity was carried out in the the Siping Road Campus infirmary. This activity was held by the infirmary of Tongji University, with the support of the Committee of Communist Youth League, Student Union, International Student Office and some other student’s groups.

It was the first time at Tongji University that foreign students were invited to join together with Chinese students to participate in a voluntary blood donation. To make sure the activity proceeded smoothly, doctors who spoke English were assigned to serve the foreign students. Student volunteers were organized to help foreign students to register. They also offered assistance during the activity. Before the activity, an English version of the knowledge and points for attention of donating blood were posted on the official WeChat account of Tongji, as well as the benefits of safely donating blood to help those in need. Students from India, South Africa, Kazakhstan and Thailand donated their blood during the four day activity.
Using the idea of “love without borders,” volunteer activities were held to promote the cross-cultural communication in special ways. According to the Assimilation Management Plan for Chinese and Foreign Students, the Committee of Communist Youth League of Tongji University, the Student Union and the International Student Office will organize more activities in the new semester to develop an internationalized campus culture. Among the activities, the Buddy Program pairs Chinese students with foreign students in order to communicate information of both their lives and studies. The Colorful Global Village and the Shanghai Culture Week are aimed at providing a platform for Chinese and foreign students to improve their understanding of each other. Also, more foreign students will be encouraged to participate in volunteer activities like the blood donation and the impoverished students’ assistance activity. The cross-cultural communication activities of various forms will surely create a closer relationship between the Chinese and foreign students and build Tongji into an international family.
