On September 20th,the Engineering Management Innovation and Engineering Philosophy Forumwas solemnly held in the 129 Auditorium, Siping Campus of Tongji University. The forum was co-hosted by Tongji University andDepartment of Engineering Managementof Chinese Academy of Engineering. It was also jointly organized by School of Economics and Management of Tongji University, Shanghai Consulting & Academic Activities Center for Academicians of Chinese Academy of Engineering and Taihu College located in Suzhou.
In this forum, academicians from China Academy of Engineering, including Sun Yongfu, Wang Jiming, Yin Ruiyu, Guo Chongqing, He Jishan, Wang Yingluo, and senior experts in the field of engineering management, including Professor Li Bocong and Professor Qiu Lianghui were invited as guest speakers. The vice principal of Tongji University, Professor Lv Peiming, and the Director of Department of Engineering Management, academician Sun Yongfu, made opening addresses on behalf of the sponsors. In addition, the Yifu Building was set as the branch meeting place of this forum. Nearly a thousand people, including experts, scholars, industry representatives, teachers and students of Tongji University were attracted to this academic summit.

With the forum’s topic being engineering management innovation and engineering philosophy, the eight academicians talked about the practice of engineering innovation like petro-chemical projects and Qinghai-Tibet Railway project. They shared their ideas and provided suggestions relating to engineering management. Besides, they introduced the 11 fields of engineering management knowledge system of the American Society for Engineering Management. Under the background of new times, the academicians analyzed the interactive relations among engineering, management and engineering philosophy from different angles. They also tried to explore the innovation of engineering management and practical application of engineering philosophical thoughts with dialectical views and rigorous thoughts. From the academicians’ point of view and because of the wide scope and large scale of engineering projects that require systematic thought, varying time spans, and a wide variety technical responsibilities that must beconsiderable concurrently, the whole project should be divided into several different subsystems according to functions and specialties that are ultimately integrated into the final product. Only by following this process can the best degree of the integral effect be realized.
During the discussion section, to the topics of “the phenomenon of engineering corruption”, “how to cultivate qualified personnel of engineering management” and “how can Chinese engineering projects enter the international stage,” the academicians and experts expressed their remarkable ideas, which provided a valuable chance for not only the students and teachers of Tongji University, but also people from all walks of life to do studies and research.

This forum is a high-level academic conference in the field of engineering management. The corporate efforts of Department of Engineering Management of Chinese Academy of Engineering and Tongji University can promote the interdisciplinary research of engineering management and engineering philosophy, thus making contributions in the process of improving China’s engineering management skills and modernization.
