Celebrations for the 71st Anniversary of the Founding of the People’s Republic of China at Tongji University

Tongji University teachers and students saluted their motherland by raising the national flag, playing the national anthem, and spelling out their love for her. In the early morning of October 1, the flag-raising ceremony was held in front of the University Library at Siping Campus to celebrate the 71st Anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China. Present at the ceremony were the University’s Party Committee Vice Secretary XU Jianping, Shanghai’s Advanced Individuals in the fight against the corona virus pandemic, outstanding Communist Party Members, and Head of the Party Committee's Security Department YANG Zhenghong. More than 300 teacher and student representatives and people from other departments also attended the ceremony, including those from the Party Committee Promotion Department, the Undergraduate and Graduate Student Affairs Department, League Committee, Freshmen’s College, and the University Library.

At about 07:30, the University National Flag Guards dressed in the Combined Honor Guard uniforms marched to the flag-raising platform in steady strides and with solemn expressions. The bright five-star red flag rose in the majestic strains of the national anthem, with teachers and students looking solemn, saluting with eyes to the national flag, and singing the national anthem in unison. Strong patriotic feelings were surging in the hearts of the teachers and students.

XU Jieshi from Jiqin Hall and GAO Zhanqi from Tonghe Hall of the Freshmen’s College gave their speeches under the national flag on behalf of the 2020 new undergraduate students. They called on their peer students to live up to the expectations of the times and never fail the youth, to carry forward the spirit of Tongji, to continue to work hard, and to contribute to the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.

Teachers and students gathered around the Chinese characters Zhong Guo (China) stuck to the ground for the first blessing video of “Youth’s Love for Motherland. They shouted "I love you, China" in unison and started a video relay to salute the new era and show their patriotic feelings.

After the flag-raising ceremony, the teachers and students stayed there for a long time. They waved the small national flags in their hands and took photos with the “China” characters to give their best wishes for the 71st Anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China.
