In early October, the Russian Academy of Arts announced the list of new foreign Honorary Academicians, of which Prof. LU Jiwei of Tongji University’s College of Architecture and Urban Planning (CAUP) was awarded the “Honorary Academician of Russian Academy of Arts.”

The Russian Academy of Arts is the highest academic authority in Russian art, and the title of Honorary Academician of the Academy is an authoritative honor in the field. It rewards artists who have made outstanding achievements and contributions in art, and people who have made contributions to art in other ways.
Prof. LU serves as the Director of Urban Design Research Center of CAUP, Member of the Urban Design Expert Committee of the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development of the People’s Republic of China, and Director of the Urban Design Department of the China Historical and Cultural City Committee. He has been devoting to urban design since the 1990s. Prof. LU has completed more than 30 works for the downtown, CBD, waterfront, historical reserve, subway hub, underground block, pedestrian zone, city square, and city axis. Prof. LU has received many awards for his excellent design. He proposed the design concept of developing “urban underground public space” and its important approach of “integrated design of under-and above-ground urban space,” based on Research on Development of Urban Underground Public Space; a project of the National Natural Science Foundation of China. Based on summing up his practice, Prof. LU put forward the theory of “Integration mechanism of urban design.” Also, he published seven monographs such as Urban Underground Public Space, Urban Design Creation - Research and Practice, Urban Design Mechanism and Practice.

The First Prize of Excellent Planning and Design of the Ministry of Education in 2002 for the urban design of the riverside area in Binjiang District, Hangzhou
The Second Prize for Progress of Science and Technology of Shanghai in 2003 for the development and practice of underground public space
The First Prize of Excellent Planning and Design of Shanghai and the Second Prize of Excellent Planning and Design of China in 2007 for the urban design of the Sichuan North Road of Shanghai Metro Line 10
The First Prize of Excellent Planning and Design of Fujian Province in 2011 for the urban design of downtown Zhangzhou, Fujian Province
The First Prize of Excellent Planning and Design of Fujian Province in 2013 for the urban design of the Taiwan Business Investment Zone in Zhangzhou, Fujian Province
