Tongji University holds 11th Meeting of the CDH Steering Committee

On November 19, the 11th Chinesisch-Deutsche Hochschule (CDH) Steering Committee Meeting was held both offline and online at Tongji University. The meeting was attended by the Second Inspector of the Department of International Cooperation and Exchanges of Chinese Ministry of Education FANG Qingzhao, Deputy Director General of the Department of European Affairs of Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs ZENG Fanhua, , Deputy Director of the Department of Eurasian and African Affairs of the China Scholarship Council XIA Qing, Secretary General of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD)Dorothea Rüland, Consul General of the Federal Republic of Germany in Shanghai Christine D. Althauser, Director of the Department of International Affairs of the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) Frithjof A. Maennel,  and members of the German Research Foundation (DFG), German partner universities, and Sino-German business community steering committees. Tongji President and CDH Steering Committee Chairman CHEN Jie attended the meeting and gave his speech, while Tongji Vice President and Secretrary General of the CDH Steering Committee WU Zhiqiang chaired the meeting.

CHEN Jie extended a warm welcome to the participants and expressed his sincere gratitude to the members and representatives for their great support for the CDH. He pointed out that, although this year posed a daunting challenge to the international cooperation, the 11th CDH Steering Committee Meeting was held as scheduled since overcoming several challenges, exhibiting our sincere desire and determination to further strengthen the Sino-German cooperation as well as gaining full recognition and support for the CDH from the Steering Committee members. In addition, he affirmed the results achieved by the CDH in the past year and expressed his hope for future cooperation between the CDH and the German partner universities and enterprises in a spirit of mutual support, thus adding a splendid chapter to the history of Sino-German cooperation with the support of Chinese and German ministries and commissions.

At the meeting, members of the steering committees of the two countries gave an overview of the general framework of political, economic, educational, and scientific relations between the two countries, recognized the accomplishments of the CDH (and its subordinating organizations) over the years, and expressed their appreciation for the significant role they have played in Sino-German cooperation and exchanges since their establishment. The CDH Steering Committee reviewed the 2019-2020 work report and the 2020-2021 work plan of the CDH and its subordinating organizations (Sino-German College for Graduate Study (CDHK), Sino-German College of Applied Sciences (CDHAW), Institute of Vocational and Technical Education (CDIBB), and the Sino-German Campus (CDC)). The work was also presented briefly in terms of the Sino-German Center for Mechanical Engineering (CDZM), Sino-German Joint R&D Center for Automotive (CDZA), Sino-German Research Institute for Economics and Management (CDAW), and Sino-German Research Center for Intelligent Science and Technology (CDFI)--four high-level Sino-German cooperation platforms that were established in 2019.

WU Zhiqiang delivered his report on the 2019-2020 annual work and the overall strategic plan of the CDH. He mentioned the CDH has continued its efforts from 2019 to 2020 to facilitate and initially complete the transformation of the CDH from being an entity institute into a high-level platform featuring lean core organization with broad reach in accordance with the Tongji-Germany Cooperation strategy. During the pandemic, the CDH turned to the online platform for guiding and evaluating the development of the four Sino-German centers for the better. In addition, the CDH has been engaged actively in advancing high-level research cooperation and human exchanges between China and Germany by organizing a series of symposiums and innovation activities. Also, with the needs of both sides, the strengths of both countries and the global frontier made the future direction of prospective cooperation, the CDH will focus on high-level collaborative innovation models such as joint PhD programs, scientific research and projects, and carry out the Sino-German Innovation Cooperation Strategy 4.0 to provide a strong impetus for the "Double First-Class" university construction and global sustainable development, he added
