Architects Regional Council Asia (ARCASIA) is an organization of Asian architects composed of architectural societies from the most representative and authoritative countries or regions in Asia. It was founded in 1979 in Jakarta, Indonesia. At present it has 21 architect groups. As the highest architectural design award in Asia, AAA aims to present outstanding architectural works in Asia, encourage the heritage of the Asian spirit, and improve Asia’s architectural environment. AAA covers six architectural categories: 1) Residential Projects; 2) Public Amenity Buildings; 3) Industrial Buildings; 4) Conservation Projects; 5) Integrated Buildings; and 6) Socially Responsible Architecture. Each category has a Gold Winner, Honorable Mention, and Mention. A total of 44 projects were awarded by AAA 2020.

The project Green Hill, led by Prof. ZHANG, was highly evaluated by the jury panel. They agreed that the project was an excellent example of maximizing the way riverside spaces can be made available to citizens, following the concept of converting part of the existing building into an urban complex of multiple functions, including the provision of spaces and greenery for people to enjoy. The project created an urban garden with accessibility to all.

Green Hill was originally a 6-storey reinforced concrete factory built in 1996 as a mechanical warehouse of the Shanghai Tobacco Co., Ltd. The building was facing the possibility of being demolished because a newly planned road (Anpu Road) would cut through it. Through inventive design, Prof. ZHANG’s team made use of the building’s high span to allow the road to pass through the development This preserves the building and allows it to extend, as a single development, to the waterfront.
