Recently, Tongji University held a forum for people from all walks of life who are part of the United Front and sought opinions and suggestions on the university's development planning during the 14th Five-Year Plan period. President CHEN Jie attended the meeting and delivered a speech, and vice Party Secretary and the head of the United Front Work Department, FENG Shenhong, presided over the meeting. Attending the meeting were: heads of different parties with Tongji University; representatives of personages without party affiliation; heads of the United Front groups; deputies to Shanghai Municipal People's Congress; CPPCC members; Shanghai Municipal Government counsellors; as well as the heads of the University President's Office, University Planning and Development Department, and the University United Front Work Department.

At the forum, the director of the Planning and Development Department, CAI Sanfa, reported on the university's planning during the 14th Five-Year Plan period. Non-Party personages participating in the forum spoke enthusiastically and expressed their views. Their speeches and discussions were aimed at deepening continuity in the construction of a world-class university with Chinese characteristics and at contributing their wisdom and knowledge to the university's scientific planning during the 14th Five-Year Plan period. They put forward many high-quality opinions and suggestions on the improvement of talent training qualities, cross-disciplinary platforms, infrastructure, campus culture and other aspects. They also expressed their determination to integrate actively into the cause of the university and contribute to its development.
After listening carefully to all the speeches, CHEN Jie made a concluding speech and sent sincere greetings and New Year's wishes to all members of the United Front at the university. He confirmed that the university attaches great importance to the United Front’s work and its key role. For a long time, the democratic parties, personages without party affiliation and non-Party intellectuals have always adhered to the original spirit of cooperation with the Communist Party of China, and have been of one mind and one direction with the development of the university, contributing their wisdom and vigour to advance the development of the university.

CHEN Jie pointed out that the university had made certain achievements in the development of a range of undertakings during the 13th Five-Year Plan period. At present, the university is making a series of efforts in areas of concern to the delegates, such as increasing investment to improve the infrastructure, strengthening the university culture to promote high-quality personnel training, developing vigorously the postdoctoral researcher team, building a cross-disciplinary platform to empower traditional disciplines, and improving the classification and evaluation of the talent team. He pointed out that the democratic parties and non-Party personages had sincere opinions and brilliant suggestions on the university's planning during the 14th Five-Year Plan period, which demonstrated the political consciousness of intellectuals inside and outside the Party to advance the Chinese Dream of the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation. The university would definitely study and absorb their ideas carefully, and revise and improve its planning accordingly.
CHEN Jie stressed that the next five years were crucial for Tongji University to flourish in China, promote high-quality development with innovation, and achieve the goal of entering the ranks of world-class universities by 2030. With the principle of combining long and short-term planning, sound strategy and tactics, theory and implementation, and working through the various demands and constraints, the university will seek profound planning and solid implementation of the 14th Five-Year Plan. This will be done through comprehensively improving the core capacity of the university and promoting the university's quality development. It is hoped that the members of the United Front of the university will continue to contribute its unique advantages of talent and intellectual capacity and carry forward the spirit of sailing together towards one goal. They should focus further on the key strategic tasks of the development of the university, present constructive suggestions, provide sound plans, achieve consensus, and work together to plan the construction of the "Double First-Class Initiative". It is also hoped that NPC deputies and CPPCC members at all levels will adhere to the problem-oriented approach, carry out further investigation and research, strengthen Tongji voices through NPC and CPPCC and strive for more favorable resources to promote the development of the university.
