Since noon, the students and faculty members of different schools have come to the vaccination site at different time slots to get registered and vaccinated under the guidance of the staff. In the pre-screening zone, the medical staff asked people questions about their health conditions, such as: Have you experienced any discomfort lately? Have you taken any medication? Have you had any fever lately? Have you taken any antibiotics? The vaccination was only carried out after all the questions had been exactly answered.

“It took about 10 minutes, and the whole process was efficient,” said LI Jie, a student who was in the detention zone for medical observation. Another student said that it was convenient to get vaccinated on campus at noon without interrupting their study and life. In order to meet the needs of the students and faculty members, the Tongji Hospital Affiliated Tongji University Branch, together with the Department of Academic and Research Work, the Office of Personnel, the Office of Assets, the Office of Information, and the Department of Physical Education and Teaching, organized the vaccination campaign in an orderly manner, from site planning, publicizing, mobilizing to scheduling, under the instruction of the Yangpu District Health Committee and the CDC of the District. The Affiliated Yangpu Hospital and the Siping Road Sub-district worked closely to determine the site, date and number of people in advance to ensure a smooth process of vaccination. The Yangpu District Health Committee sent staffs to the vaccination site to provide technical guidance on vaccination procedures and cold chain management. A group of nurses, of which 10 were from the Affiliated Yangpu Hospital, 10 from Siping Community Health Center and 50 from the Tongji Hospital Affiliated Tongji University Branch, managed to take shifts for the vaccination without interfering with their regular jobs. The Shanghai Medical Emergency Center provided an ambulance for the temporary vaccination site.

“At first, we used vehicles to send the students and faculty members to another vaccination site, but a maximum of 2,000 people could be transported a day. It didn’t work out for the university with a nearly 40,000 population.” PENG Zhenwei, vice secretary of the CPC Committee of the university, said that the vaccination site on campus not only made it convenient for the students and faculty members, but also improved the vaccination rate, thus helping the university get the entire population vaccinated as early as possible to establish a complete immunization barrier.

“More than 5,000 students and faculty members are expected to get vaccinated each day, and the vaccination site, under the guidance of the College of Architecture and Urban Planning, is designed as a relocatable facility which is scalable from 20 to 60 desks and meets the hygiene requirements, so as to satisfy the needs of different campuses. The university will notify the doctors of unexpected conditions, if any, and the emergency clinic is available 24 hours a day as well,” said the head of Tongji Hospital Affiliated Tongji University Branch.

In order to get as many faculty members and students vaccinated as possible, the university has answered students' questions by giving broad publicity and promoting health literacy. “It is our responsibility to accept vaccination to protect the society,” a student said.

More than 100 workers from the pharmacy, laboratory, emergency department and hospital infection-control department of the Tongji Hospital Affiliated Tongji University Branch provided assistance in vaccination and consultation. In addition, more than 50 volunteers from the University Youth League Committee, 20 property and logistics staffs, 10 security guards, and 200 daily workers provided services. The vaccination on the Siping Road Campus is expected to complete at the end of this Saturday (April 10), and will be followed by the Jiading Campus.
