At the invitation of CHEN Jie, a member of CAS (Chinese Academy of Sciences), president of Tongji University, and convener of the 8th Review Group of Control Science and Engineering Discipline of the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council, and DUAN Guangren, a member of CAS from Harbin Institute of Technology, all members of the Review Group visited our university and held the first working meeting on April 22. The members of the Review Group included academician ZHENG Nanning from Xi'an Jiaotong University, academician BAO Weimin from China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation, academician TANG Lixin from Northeastern University, president YAO Yu from Harbin Engineering University, and vice president QIAO Junfei from Beijing University of Technology.

At the meeting, vice president GU Xianglin of our university introduced the history of the control science discipline in Tongji University.

Academician ZHENG Nanning, who had been the convener of the 7th Review Group, stressed that all members should study and implement the spirit of General Secretary XI Jinping’s remark made during his visit to Tsinghua University, strive to develop the automation discipline with Chinese characteristics, and take the control science in China to a new level. He also wished the 8th Review Group success in its mission.

ZHENG Nanning speaking

ZHOU Jie, secretary general of the 8th Review Group, shared the work arrangement of the Ministry of Education and the proposed annual work plan, and pointed out that it was important and urgent to compile the guiding catalog of discipline norms and revise the discipline development report.

ZHOU Jie speaking

CHEN Jie suggested that all members study the eight requirements proposed by academician ZHENG Nanning, specifically, to refine the degree catalog, review the degree authorization, establish the curriculum and teaching materials, formulate the academic standards, assess the discipline quality, build the discipline professionalism, facilitate the research and exchange, and complement the Review Group itself, and the priority should be given to the guiding catalog of discipline norms and the discipline development report.

CHEN Jie speaking

The experts of the Review Group had a discussion then and provided opinions and suggestions about the development of the control science and engineering discipline.

At the end of the meeting, DUAN Guangren extended his gratitude to Tongji University for hosting the meeting and hoped that the control discipline would play a significant role in artificial intelligence. CHEN Jie encouraged all members to offer advices and make contributions in response to challenges, to embrace innovative practices, and improve the working mechanism of the Review Group.

DUAN Guangren delivering a speech

The discipline of control science and engineering of Tongji University has taken great leaps of late with increasing influence. With the discipline serving the international and domestic academic sectors, some faculty members of the discipline act as the vice chairmen of the Chinese Association of Automation, the Chinese Association for Artificial Intelligence and the Chinese Institute of Command and Control, as well as the chairmen of several provincial and ministerial-level societies. Academician CHEN Jie has been elected as the convener of the expert group of the Artificial Intelligence and Blockchain Science and Technology Committee of the Ministry of Education, leading the construction of an artificial intelligence think tank. HONG Yiguang and CHEN Hong have served as executive members of IEEE CSS (Control Systems Society of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers). CHEN Jie and HONG Yiguang have served as the conveners of the Review Group of Control Science and Engineering Discipline and the Review Group of System Science Discipline, respectively, of the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council. The discipline has one IFAC (International Federation of Automatic Control) fellow, two IEEE fellows and three CAA (Chinese Association of Automation) fellows. One person of the discipline has been awarded by the Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation, with one selected as the Chief Scientist of the Basic Science Center of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, six selected as the Chief Scientists of the National Key Research and Development Program, and three selected for the Sponsorship Program by China Association for Science and Technology (CAST). In 2020, the discipline hosted the China Automation Congress (CAC), which brought together more than 20,000 scholars online and offline to share the theme of “Create Futures with Autonomous Intelligence”. The discipline has taken the lead in establishing the Class IV peak discipline of “Intelligent Science and Technology” in Shanghai, building the Shanghai Research Institute for Intelligent Autonomous Systems, initiating the Shanghai municipal key sci-tech projects, and creating several large scientific facilities and R&D platforms. Breakthroughs have been made in intelligent sensing, autonomous terminals, network coordination and control systems, etc. with a bid to achieve a number of original and innovative research findings in the intelligent autonomous systems, drive industrial evolution in smart city, smart construction, smart manufacturing, smart medical care, smart agriculture, etc., and serve the national innovation-driven development strategy.
