On May 13, the Maglev Technology Key Laboratory of Railway Industry was unveiled jointly by the National Railway Administration (NRA) and Tongji University. The first meeting of its first Academic Board was held, on the same day. marking the start of the lab’s normal operation after its approval at the end of 2020. The lab is one of the seven Key Laboratories of Railway Industry recently established to satisfy the demands for the industry in line with the innovation-driven development strategy of the CPC Central Committee and the State Council. Under the guidance of the national key strategies, the Maglev Technology Key Laboratory will focus on cutting-edge technologies and engineering applications in the transportation sector, such as the relation between magnetic coupling and rail in the maglev transit system, intelligent maintenance and security, interaction between maglev equipment and environment, and integrated verification of maglev system.

The meeting was attended by more than 30 participants, including LIU Yan, Grade-2 inspector of the Department of Science, Technology and Legal Affairs of NRA; ZHONG Zhihua, vice president of Chinese Academy of Engineering; LIANG Jianying, vice general manager and chief engineer of CRRC Qingdao Sifang Locomotive & Rolling Stock Co., Ltd.; FENG Jianghua, chief engineer of CRRC Zhuzhou Institute Co., Ltd.; ZHAI Ming, chief engineer of Shanghai Maglev Transportation Development Co., Ltd.; and FENG Shenhong, executivevice secretary of CPC committee of Tongji University, as well as the heads of the Institute of Rail Transit and National Maglev Transportation Engineering Technology R&D Center of Tongji University, representatives of cooperative organizations, academic leaders of key laboratories and scientific researchers.
At the meeting, FENG Shenhong announced the decision of Tongji University to appoint LIN Guobin as the director of the lab, KANG Jingsong as the executive vice director, DING Shenshen, ZHAI Ming and LIU Haitao as the deputy directors. He alsoreleased the list of members of the Academic Board, and acknowledged, on behalf of the university, the constant trust and support of the NRA and cooperative organizations - CRRC Qingdao Sifang Locomotive & Rolling Stock Co., Ltd., Shanghai Maglev Transportation Development Co., Ltd., and CRRC Zhuzhou Institute Co., Ltd. He added that Tongji University will continue to attach importance to and support the development and application of maglev transit technology, give full play to its advantages in the discipline of transportation, and contribute more to the strategy of building China into a country with strong transportation network.

LIU Yan remarked, the partnership between Tongji University, boasting top-level research teams and maglev technology research platforms, and the three cooperative organizations, leading the maglev technology R&D in China, will substantially facilitate the seamless connection between the innovation chain and industrial chain as well as the commercialization of findings in research. She put forward four guidelines for the development of the lab: 1. to strengthen the leadership, increase investment and form a powerful innovation chain with co-built platforms and shared resources; 2. to accelerate the reservation and R&D of maglev theory and critical technology in line with market demand, and lay a solid foundation for the maglev industry; 3. to boost the innovation capability of talents, develop world-class young scientific leaders and top-notch teams, and nurture young scientific professionals with international competitiveness; 4. to give the Academic Board full play to its role as a thinktank to provide technical consultation from the perspectives of the country and the industry.

The Academic Board of the Key Laboratory of Railway Industry in Maglev Technology is comprised of 13 experts, of which, Prof. ZHONG Zhihua serves as the director. The vice directors include Prof. WU Guanghui, chief scientist of Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China, Ltd., and Prof. WU Zhiqiang of Tongji University, and the members include Prof. TONG Xiaohua, vice president of Tongji University, Prof. CHEN Xiaohong, president of Institute of Rail Transit of Tongji University, LIANG Jianying, chief engineer of CRRC Qingdao Sifang Locomotive & Rolling Stock Co., Ltd., SHENG Xiongwei, general manager of Shanghai Maglev Transportation Development Co., Ltd., FENG Jianghua, chief engineer of CRRC Zhuzhou Institute Co., Ltd., Prof. ZHANG Weihua of Southwest Jiaotong University, Prof. LONG Zhiqiang of National University of Defense Technology, GE Qiongxuan, researcher of CAS Institute of Electrical Engineering, Prof. WANG Dong of Naval University of Engineering, and WANG Daqing, chief technical director of Technology Center of Shanghai Shentong Metro Co., Ltd.
Members of the Academic Board
As the director of the Key Laboratory of Railway Industry in Maglev Technology, LIN Guobin reported to the Board the master plan of the lab including objectives, researches and management mechanism, as well as the work plan 2021. The Board then considered and discussed the plans and provided instructions and suggestions.
