An online symposium was held on May 6 between Tongji University and the University of Sheffield (UK) to renew an inter-university cooperation agreement, which was signed by Mr. LOU Yongqi, Vice President of Tongji University, and Dr. Malcolm Butler, Vice President of Global Engagement of the University of Sheffield, respectively. The symposium was attended by representatives from the School of Medicine, the College of Architecture and Urban Planning, the School of Materials Science and Engineering, and the International Exchange and Cooperation Office of Tongji University.

At the symposium, the two sides recalled their fruitful cooperation in spheres such as medical, landscape and material sciences. Mr. LOU Yongqi hailed the University of Sheffield as an important strategic partner of Tongji University in the United Kingdom, and applauded the joint programmes and academic cooperation initiatives rolled out by the two universities in such disciplines as medical sciences, architecture & landscape, engineering, material sciences, etc. He hoped that in the years to come, the two sides could further pool essential resources and put more focus on the interdisciplinary research into artificial intelligence, sustainable development, etc., thereby giving full play to the pivotal role of higher education institutions in knowledge innovation, fulfilling social responsibilities and shaping a world of common prosperity and shared future. He added the two sides should strive to strengthen international influence, seek cooperation opportunities in the realms of smart city and medical materials, broaden the way of thinking, and discuss the possibility of holding multi-disciplinary academic conferences in rotation, so as to open up new opportunities for top-notch talent fostering and in-depth research cooperation, and to roll out more joint initiatives.

Lauding Tongji University as one of the eight global strategic partners of the University of Sheffield, Dr. Malcolm Butler said that the two sides share the same mission and that the cooperation between the two has yield fruitful results. He added that the development vision of the University of Sheffield for this year will focus on research, education and innovation, and hoped that the two sides would take the existing cooperation to a new level and work together to tackle global challenges in the forthcoming years.
Later, Mr. LOU Yongqi and Dr. Malcolm Butler signed their names on the inter-university cooperation agreement on behalf of the two universities to unfold a brand-new chapter of bilateral cooperation.
