Prof. XU Jinfu, vice secretary of CPC committee of the Shanghai Pulmonary Hospital and discipline leader of the Department of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, pointed out that there were some misconceptions of asthma control, e.g. failure to continue a long-term treatment, administration only upon attack, treatment only counting from attack to infusion, fear of medicine dependence resulted from long-term administration, etc. He stressed, the misconceptions should be addressed through joint efforts by both medical staffs and patients and by improving the cognition of asthma, and patients’ life quality could be boosted only with standardized, constant treatment and daily management.

Prof. CHU Haiqing, director of the Department of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, said, like hypertension, diabetes and other chronic diseases, asthma could not be cured overnight, and the airway inflammation of asthma could be controlled for an extended period of time only through chronic administration in most of the cases. The associate chief physician LU Haiwen showed the true facts and common misconceptions about asthma with an effort to correct the patients’ cognition of the disease. The associate chief physician CHENG Kebin gave the details on the up-to-date progress of severe asthma treatment, as well as the epidemiology of asthma, severe asthma treatment, clinic research of targeted medicine, etc. The head nurse HE Yan provided the patients with the guidance for self-management of the disease, focusing on the disease control, essential self-management skills and self-management tools for patients.
