Excellent Teacher Award
Wang Pinxian: moral education must advocate lofty faith and science thrives on questions.
Born in Shanghai in 1936, Prof. WANG Pinxian is a marine geologist and a professor at the School of Ocean and Earth Sciences, Tongji University. He graduated from the Geology Department of Moscow University in 1960. From 1981 to 1982, he acquired a Humboldt Research Fellowship and conducted research at Kiel University in Germany. In 1991, he was elected a Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Specializing in paleo-oceanography and micro-paleontology and focusing on the research into climate evolution and South China Sea geology, he has committed himself to advancing the development of China's deep-sea sciences and pioneered China's research on paleoceanography by putting forth novel arguments such as the "low-latitude drive" of climate change. In 1999, he spearheaded the first ocean drilling in the South China Sea, setting a precedent for deep-sea scientific drilling in China. From 2011 to 2018, he presided over a state key project titled "Evolution of the Deep Sea Process in the South China Sea" of National Natural Science Foundation, China's biggest ever basic research project in marine sciences, taking the South China Sea into the forefront of the international deep-sea research. With the discovery of deep-water coral forests in 2018 during deep dives in the South China Sea, he zealously pushed for deep-sea seabed observation and contributed to the roll-out of seabed observation big science project in China. In successfully advancing the thriving development of earth system science in China, he advocates strengthening the cultural connotations of science and throws himself into marine science communication activities. Being the author of a string of influential works such as Geology of China Seas and Earth System and Evolution, he has reaped the National Natural Science Award and the Milutin Milankovic Medal (European Geosciences Union). He is the honorary fellow of the Geological Society of London, fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and fellow of The World Academy of Sciences. He has successively served as the President of the Chinese Scientific Research Committee on Oceanic Research, the Vice President of the Scientific Committee on Oceanic Research (SCOR) and the Deputy Director of the Academic Committee of the Past Global Changes (PAGES). He initiated the International Conference on Asian Marine Geology and presided over several international working groups, such as the Global Monsoon Working Group. He was a delegate to the 6th and 7th National People's Congress, and a delegate to the 8th, 9th and 10th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference.

GE Baoxue: focus on translational medicine research and lead students to pursue excellence.
Born in Jiangsu Province in 1967, Prof. GE Baoxue is a Doctor of Science and is currently a professor at the Tongji University School of Medicine, member of the Academic Committee of Tongji University, Director of the Academic Committee of the School of Medicine, Dean of the Department of Immunology and Pathogenic Microbiology of the School of Medicine, Director of Translational Medicine Research Center of Shanghai Pulmonary Hospital Affiliated to Tongji University, Director of Shanghai Key Laboratory of Tuberculosis, and Executive Deputy Director of Shanghai Clinical Research Center for Infectious Diseases. Long been engaged in the research into the functional mechanism and clinical translational applications of innate immune pathway molecules, he has published more than 80 papers as corresponding author (including co-author) in SCI-indexed journals, including Nature (2 papers), Nature Immunology (3 papers), Cell Research, Cell Host & Microbe, Nature Microbiology, Nature Communications (3 papers), etc. He has applied for 20 invention patents and been awarded 6 patents, and has kicked off the corresponding clinical research. He has presided over a broad spectrum of research projects funded by the National Key R&D Program, the 973 Program of Ministry of Science and Technology (completed with excellence), the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, Key Program of National Natural Science Foundation of China (4 projects), Major Research Plan of National Natural Science Foundation of China, Major Special Program of Infectious Diseases of National Health Commission, Shanghai Key Clinical Discipline Construction Program, etc. He has been invited to serve as the Associate Editor-in-Chief of the Chinese Journal of Cell Biology, the editorial board member of Cellular & Molecular Immunology, Pathogens, Tuberculosis, Microbes & Infection, Animal Diseases, Chinese Journal of Antituberculosis, and Journal of Tuberculosis and Lung Disease, the Vice Director of the HIV and Tuberculosis Committee of the Chinese Association of STD/AIDS Prevention and Control, and the member of the Standing Committee of the Tuberculosis Branch of the China Medical Insurance Promotion Association. With research results being selected as one of the top ten medical technology news in 2020 and ESI highly cited papers, he was awarded the First Prize of Natural Science Award (First Author) by the Ministry of Education and the very first Tan Jiazhen Life Science Innovation Award. Many graduate students trained by him have been selected as candidates of the High-level Young Talents Program, NSFC Excellent Young Scientists, Top Young Scholar of National "Ten Thousand Talent Program", etc.

SHI Zhenming: stay loyal to career, conquer challenges and pursue excellence
Born in Kazuo County, Liaoning Province in 1968, Prof. SHI Zhenming is currently a doctoral supervisor and the Director of the Infrastructure Department of Tongji University. He has been awarded honors such as the "Outstanding Teacher with Excellent Professional Ethics" by Tongji University in 2020, "Outstanding Party Workers in Institutions" by Tongji University in 2020, and the Administration Prize of Shanghai Talent Fostering Award in 2019. He successively served as associate professor of geological engineering at Tongji University, Deputy Director of the Institute of Urban Engineering Geology and Environment at the Department of Geotechnical Engineering, Deputy Director of the Department of Geotechnical Engineering, Deputy Director (temporary post) of the Tibet Construction Department (as a member of the "Ninth Batch of Doctors Serving Tibet" assembled by the Organization Department of the CPC Central Committee), Vice Party Secretary of the College of Civil Engineering, and Director of the Infrastructure Department. Since taking on the post as the Director of Infrastructure Department, he has put in relentless efforts to work out the best plans for the works undertaken by the Infrastructure Department, with multiple infrastructure works being honored with "Shanghai Civilized Construction Site", "Shanghai High-Quality Structure", etc. As the instructor of his capable team, he has strived to reshape the management model and motivate the team members through vertical-horizontal integration. As the project manager, he has harnessed his professional expertise and led the team to meticulously analyze the pile foundation, curtain wall system, structural system and other aspects of the infrastructure projects to save noteworthy investment costs. CHEN Xuefeng: Make "scrap collection" a lofty business
Born in February 1980, CHEN Xuefeng graduated from Tongji University in 2002 with a bachelor's degree in computer science and technology. He is currently the founder and CEO of Wanwu Xinsheng (Love Recycling) Group, and has been honored with "Leading Talents of Shanghai", "CBN Innovation 50", etc. On the heels of Shanghai's launch of domestic waste sorting in July 2019, he spearheaded his company to rev up the implementation of the proprietary intelligent domestic waste recycling station, and successfully completed the construction of waste collection and sorting points and "dual-network integration" service points at Tongji University in June 2019, marking the very first effort of waste sorting and "dual-network integration" in Shanghai. Under his leadership, the company is also committed to becoming a stellar example of the seamless integration of commercial value and social value by staging the "Campaign of Donating Digital Devices to Children in Mountain Villages", which has by far benefited dozens of primary schools and hundreds of children in mountain villages. As the CEO of a social enterprise advocating environmental protection, he has accumulated 10 years of development and operation experience in the Internet industry. The company recycles more than tens of millions of used electronic products every year, a size comparable to 11,000 hectares of forests preserved and 13,200 tons of carbon emissions reduced. While calling upon users to protect the environment and to make the best use of their electronic gadgets, he also endeavors to contribute himself to the development of circular economy. Over the past 10 years, he has grown the company into China's largest electronic product recycling and safe disposal platform, which has been honored with many awards such as "Venture 50" and "Most Innovative Institutions of the Year".

As an undergraduate student admitted into the College of Transportation Engineering in 2018, LIU Jiaqi outshined his peers with a stunning GPA as high as 4.91, and he has reaped 3 national-level awards, 2 provincial/municipal-level awards and 9 university-level awards, including China National Scholarship, First Prize of the National Transportation Science and Technology Competition, First Prize and "Higher Education Press Cup" Prize of China Undergraduate Mathematical Contest in Modeling, and Grand Prize of the National Contest on Green Supply Chain and Reverse Logistics Design. He completed 1 project under Shanghai Training Program of Innovation and Entrepreneurship for Undergraduates in the capacity of team leader, and published two papers as the first author. As an undergraduate student admitted into the School of Medicine in 2016, CHEN Yi is committed to harnessing scientific research to tackle social and medical problems. He proposed the world's leading therapy of fibrosis, and put forth the novel screening thresholds that help save medical resources in the sphere of tumor screening. As the first author, he has published one paper in IOVS (a SCI-indexed top journal in its field), one paper in a core Chinese journal and one paper at ARVO Annual Meeting, and has been granted one patent in addition to 3 papers being considered by SCI-indexed journals. He has been honored with 2 national-level awards including the "Challenge Cup", 2 provincial/ministerial-level awards and 5 university-level awards. As a student cadre, he initiated the "Yangtze River Delta Medical Association of Elites" and joined the first "Yinfu Class" to organize red tours to Yan'an and Jinggangshan. As a medical student, he organized many free consultation activities to shoulder the responsibility as a doctor.

As an undergraduate student admitted into the School of Software Engineering in 2017, ZHANG Zhe is currently the Chairman of the Student Union of Tongji University (also a temporary member of the presidium) and an outstanding student of "Yinfu Class" under the Third Young Marxist Fostering Project. As the recipient of honors such as China National Scholarship, Outstanding Student Model and Outstanding Student Cadre, he has been recommended for admission to Peking University with the highest-ranking comprehensive performance in his grade. ZHENG Xueying is currently in her fourth grade of a master-doctor combined program at the School of Materials Science and Engineering. In addition to applying for one national invention patent, she has successively reaped honors such as China National Scholarship as undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral students respectively, the Outstanding Presentation Award of the 20th National Electrochemistry Meeting, and the "Academic Pioneer" and "Outstanding Student Model" during the 14th selection by Tongji University. ZHENG Xueying

Currently in his fifth grade of doctoral program at the School of Life Sciences and Technology, CHEN Yu entertains a keen interest in biology and was recommended for admission to Tongji University through the China High School Biology Olympiad, with academic performance ranking first in both undergraduate class and doctoral class. Aligning efforts to his own interest and the national strategy, he has carried out diligent research into ageing and DNA repair, publishing 5 papers as first author or co-first author in SCI-indexed papers. As a doctoral student admitted into the School of Economics and Management in 2020, XIN Xu is lauded for his outstanding performance in party building, and has served as the secretary of party branch three terms, in addition to the approval of 4 key "alignment & pioneer" projects of student party branches and the compilation of the Work Guide of Tongji University for Recruiting Student Party Members (60,000+ words). He has published 7 papers in SCI/SSCI-indexed journals, received 11 national-level awards for scientific and technological innovation, and compiled one textbook. During the COVID-19 outbreak, he worked hard to spread the voice of Tongji by publishing news articles, with average views of each article topping 60,000. XIN Xu

ZHOU Jian: plan for a city where the people can share a sense of gain.
ZHOU Jian is a professor, doctoral supervisor and party committee member of the College of Architecture and Urban Planning, and the president of Shanghai Tongji Urban Planning & Design Institute Co., Ltd. He concurrently serves as the Vice President of China Association of City Planning, director of the Urban Planning Society of China (UPSC), vice chairman of the Historical and Cultural City Academic Committee of UPSC, and executive director of ICOMOS CHINA. He has committed himself to urban planning teaching and research for more than 3 decades, fostering more than 100 graduate students and completing some 200 planning and design projects. He has been honored with 2 international awards for heritage conservation, one National Excellent Engineering Survey and Design Gold Award, 21 National Excellent Urban and Rural Planning and Design Awards, "French Knight Insignia of Literature and Art" (2004), "May 1st Labor Medal of Shanghai" (2010) and "China National Engineering Survey and Design Master" (2019). ZHOU Jian
ZHANG Delu: stay true to the original aspiration and spearhead China's foreign language studies
Born in Shandong Province in 1955, ZHANG Delu is a Master of Arts, and is currently a professor and doctoral supervisor at the College of Foreign Languages of Tongji University, an expert enjoying the special government allowance from the State Council, vice chairman of the Functional Linguistics Committee of the Association for Comparative Studies of English and Chinese, and vice chairman of the Semiotics Committee of China Society of Logic. He has achieved fruitful results in his research into systematic functional linguistics, English stylistics, semiotics, foreign language teaching, text analysis and other fields. Being the creator of the "Textual Cohesion and Coherent Integration Model" and the "Multimodal Discourse Research & Comprehensive Analysis Model", he has remained among the "Highly Cited Foreign Language Scholars" in China for consecutive years. He presided over 2 national social sciences research projects and 2 humanities and social sciences research projects of the Ministry of Education, and has published more than 200 papers in well-known domestic and foreign journals (including 124 papers in CSSCI-indexed journals) and 26 monographs, translated works, textbooks and dictionaries. Born in Changzhou City, Jiangsu Province in 1982, XU Yunxia is currently the Deputy Dean of the Sino-Italian College and the General Office Director of the College of Design and Innovation. As an undergraduate student admitted into the School of Automotive Studies in 2016, CHEN Huaibo specializes in the research of combustion and computational fluid dynamics. He has published 2 Q1 papers in SCI-indexed journals, including one published in Proceedings of the Combustion Institute (as the first author), a top journal in the field of combustion, marking the fourth time the teachers and students of Tongji have published papers in this journal since its inception in 1993. He serves as a reviewer of SAE Technical Paper and has been honored with "Academic Star of Tongji University" and China National Scholarship. He has received offers to study the master, doctoral or master-doctor combined programs at MIT, University of Cambridge, University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), ETH Zuric and other prestigious universities.

CHEN Huaibo
MENG Shiqiao: uphold lofty ambitions, gain extensive knowledge and stick to the purpose in spearheading the intelligent development of civil engineering.
As an undergraduate student admitted into the College of Civil Engineering in 2017, MENG Shiqiao stands out from his peers with the highest-ranking GPA. Apart from major-specific courses, he also devotes himself to the study of artificial intelligence and is committed to the interdisciplinary research of civil engineering and artificial intelligence. In addition to publishing several papers in EI- and SCI-indexed papers as the first author and attending domestic and international academic conferences, he also took an active part in the interdisciplinary research for projects under the National Key R&D Program. As a doctoral student admitted into the School of Medicine in 2018, WU Jiaojiao has been honored with 3 National Scholarships for Doctoral Students or National Scholarships for Encouragement, "Outstanding Student Model of Tongji University", "Graduate Student Academic Pioneer" during the 14th selection, "Outstanding Graduate" and "Outstanding Student" of the Ocean University of China and "Outstanding Young Volunteer". As a doctoral students admitted into the College of Architecture and Urban Planning in 2017, CHU Songfeng has been honored with "Outstanding CPC Member of Tongji University" and received scholarships many times. He is determined to become the "Cultural Guardian for Rural Revitalization". To shore up the national drive for rural revitalization, he has carried out research on the protection and utilization of rural heritage in more than ten provinces and cities. As the secretary of the postgraduate party branch, he has kicked off a succession of party building efforts to contribute to rural revitalization. He also took part in the drafting of a policy for the conservation and management of traditional Chinese villages as the lead author. His rural practice has been selected as a typical case recognized and promoted internationally.

ZHANG Chen: pacesetter in the realm of water supply and drainage
Born in May 1964 and graduated from Tongji University in 1985 with a bachelor's degree in water supply and drainage, ZHANG Chen is currently the Chief Engineer of Shanghai Municipal Engineering Design and Research Institute (Group) Co., Ltd., China National Engineering Survey and Design Master, and an adjunct professor of Tongji University. He has been honored with 3 second prizes of National Science and Technology Progress Award, 4 provincial/ministerial first prizes for science and technology progress, one provincial/ministerial first prize for technological invention, one national gold prize for excellent design, and 10 industrial first prizes for excellent design. He was among the national candidates for the "New Century Hundred-Thousand-Ten Thousand Talents Project" and has been awarded such honors as the "Standardization Master" by China Association for Engineering Construction Standardization and the "Technology Pacesetter" by the Ministry of Ecology and Environment. Since his entry into this industry 36 years ago, he has dedicated himself to underpinning the construction of ecological civilization and serving the improvement of urban water environment quality and pollution control, and has presided over the design of more than 100 major water supply and drainage projects to usher in the high-quality development and high-standard construction across the industry. Among others, Shanghai Bailonggang Wastewater Treatment Plant, the largest project of its kind in Asia designed under his leadership, reaped the "Centenary Award" of the International Federation of Consulting Engineers (FIDIC). He framed China's sludge treatment/disposal and waterlogging prevention standard system, presided over the compilation of more than 20 national and industry standards, and plugged the yawning gaps in domestic standard systems, thus providing strong technical support for the standardized construction of drainage systems and the improvement of China's environmental management mechanism. In the meantime, with a strong enthusiasm for helping young talents, he has developed a unique technical experience training model of Shanghai Municipal Engineering Design and Research Institute (Group) Co., Ltd. underlain by research projects, engineering design and standard compilation. This helps foster a host of top-notch water supply and drainage professionals and contributes significantly to the cultivation of high-quality water supply and drainage specialists and the sustainable development of this discipline in China. Furthermore, he actively promoted the in-depth integration of industry, university, research and application by partnering with enterprises to undertake national science and technology major projects.

ZHANG Chen
LI Yaming: adhere to the transformation of traditional villages and strive to be the pacesetter of rural revitalization.
Born in October 1967 and admitted in 1985, 1992 and 1995 respectively into the undergraduate, graduate and doctoral programs of the College of Architecture and Urban Planing, LI Yaming is currently the Board Chairman of Xiamen Landshine Investment Co., Ltd. After serving in various roles such as planning and design, urban management, and real estate development, he has recently diverted his attention to the transformation and activation of ancient villages and towns. Since 2015, he has led and invested in the renovation of some 10 traditional villages and towns, including Banding Village in Lianjiang, Fuzhou where he transformed a village heavily polluted by the stone processing industry into a "Gold Medal Tourism Village in Fujian (2021)", and the "Ancient Dwelling Homestay", the first homestay in Fuzhou recommended and accredited by the official WeChat account of Fuzhou Municipal Public Security Bureau. He is also zealous in showcasing the Chinese experience in rural reconstruction. In 2018, harnessing the newly-renovated Sanluocuo Neighborhood, he successfully curated the "Building a Future Countryside" themed exhibition of China Pavilion at the 16th Venice Architecture Biennale, and joined the world tour of "Building a Future Countryside" themed exhibition upon invitation to display China's valuable experience in rural construction at the Aedes Gallery Berlin (Germany) and the 14th Curitiba International Biennial of Contemporary Art (Brazil). He is also committed to promoting the upgrading of traditional industries through the transformation of ancient towns. Thanks to his efforts, the renovation of Yanshen Ancient Town, located in Boshan Town, Zibo City, Shandong Province, has prompted the leap-forward development of the town’s traditional industries — ceramics and colored glaze.

LI Yaming
WANG Kai: adhere to "people-centric" planning and achieve economic boom in places with appealing scenery
Born in November 1963 and graduated from Tongji University in 1986 with a bachelor's degree in urban planning, WANG Kai is currently the President of China Academy of Urban Planning and Design. As an eminent expert in urban and regional planning, he has presided over a string of major national research projects and major design projects. He has served in leading roles in drafting the “National Urban System Planning”, “Urban Master Plan of Beijing” and the urban development strategies of Hangzhou, Ningbo, Xiamen and other cities. He was the chief expert for the National Science and Technology Support Program for the "11th Five-Year" and the "12th Five-Year" periods. He has published more than 40 papers and monographs such as National Spatial Planning, Trend and Evaluation of China's Urbanization, Classification and Distribution of China's City Clusters, Knowledge and Practice in Planning, etc. He has been honored with a great many awards, including the First Prizes for Excellent Design by Ministry of Construction for the "Urban Master Plan of Beijing", "Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Urban and Rural Planning", etc. The planning and construction of Xiong'an New Area is a future-oriented megaproject and an ambitious initiative rolled out by China. As the chief technical leader, China Academy of Urban Planning and Design (CAUPD) has been deeply involved in the preparation of relevant plans for Xiong'an New Area from the early planning and demonstration stage, providing pivotal support for the finalization of the planning system. Presently, he is leading a research and design team of CAUPD to render full-fledged support to the orderly advancement of the respective works undertaken in Xiong'an New Area, thereby contributing to the successful implementation of this "future-oriented" megaproject.

WANG Kai
GAO Weijun: a low-carbon urban environment builder with growing influence on the international academic stage.
Born in February 1962 and graduated from Tongji University in 1982 with a bachelor's degree in heating and ventilation, he is currently a professor and doctoral supervisor at Qingdao University of Technology, and has been honored with "The Most Extraordinary Scientist of Qingdao", "The Prize of the Architectural Institute of Japan for Design", etc. He has long been dedicated to the theoretical and practical research in the spheres of environmental architecture, circular architecture, smart architecture, and marine architecture, and has laid the cornerstone of the whole new discipline of urban environmental engineering in Japan. He took part in the formulation of the low-carbon urban environment planning for Kitakyushu Eco-Town Project, and has presided over the environmental simulation and evaluation of many metropolitan areas in Japan, including Tokyo Prefecture, Fukuoka Prefecture and the surrounding areas, exerting profound influence on the planning and running of modern Japanese cities. The urban energy-environment planning and analysis system jointly developed by him and Daniel Kammen, winner of 2007 Nobel Prize and professor at the University of California, has been widely applied in urban planning and smart city construction in Japan and Asia, achieving influential construction results internationally. In 2018, he was elected as a foreign associate (tenured) by the Engineering Academy of Japan (EAJ), becoming the first Chinese foreign associate of EAJ. Keen on social activities, he is the Chairman of China-Japan Cultural Exchange Association (HIBIKINO) and the Director of the Atsumi International Scholarship Foundation, making important contributions to the dissemination of China's voices, culture and stories, as well as the friendly exchanges between the people of China and Japan. During his tenure as the third President of Tongji University Alumni Association of Japan, he managed to pool the resources contributed by Tongji alumni in Japan and built a mutual assistance platform to address the needs of Tongji alumni, a good deed that won him respect and admiration among the alumni.
