The Ninth Kwang-Hua Forum was successfully held at Tongji University on December 10-12, 2021. The Forum was jointly organized by College of Civil Engineering of Tongji University, State Key Laboratory of Disaster Reduction in Civil Engineering, International Joint Research Laboratory of Earthquake Engineering, Earthquake Resiliency Committee of Seismological Society of China and Shanghai Engineering Research Center for Resilient Cities and Intelligent Disaster Mitigation. Twenty-four leading figures in earthquake engineering, among whom 9 from China and 15 were from other countries, delivered lectures at the Forum. The Forum was held at Tongji University and streamed live online due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Audience at Ninth Kwang-Hua Forum, Tongji University
Prof. GU Xianglin, Vice President of Tongji University made welcome speech at the opening ceremony. Prof. LU Xilin, member of Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) and chairman of the Academic Committee of the Forum, gave the audience a briefing on the previous eight Kwang-Hua forums. Prof. ZHOU Fulin, member of CAE, Prof. OU Jinping, member of CAE, Prof. LI Jie, member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Prof. DU Xiuli, member of CAE, Prof. Billie F. Spencer, foreign member of CAE, Prof. LI Guoqiang, foreign member of the Belgian Royal Flemish Academy of Sciences and Arts, Prof. Carlos Ventura, member of the Canadian Academy of Engineering and Prof. Hong Hao, member of the Australian Academy of Engineering among other leading experts in earthquake engineering attended the Forum either on site or online. Prof. ZHOU Ying, Dean of the College of Civil Engineering, Tongji University chaired the Organizing Committee of the Forum.

Online experts and scholars at home and abroad
The theme of the Forum was Innovations and Implementations in Earthquake Engineering Research: Engineering Resilience. Twenty-four experts delivered presentations on the topics of seismic resilient structures, base-isolation, structural health monitoring, performance-based seismic design and evaluation, seismic resilient bridge structures, and seismic design of non-structural components. The topics of resilient city, structural systems enabling functional recovery, seismic structural controlling, resilient materials, new technologies, and new structural systems were explored at length at the Forum. Over 120 people attended the Forum at Tongji University while over 6000 person-times watched the Forum live online.
Since 2008, eight Kwang-Hua forums were organized, themes of which were carefully selected to follow the state-of-the-art earthquake engineering research in the world. They were Wenchuan Earthquake and its Post-disaster Reconstruction in 2008, Performance-based Design Theory and Code Development for Civil and Structural Engineering in 2009, Sustainable Civil Engineering in 2010, New Challenges of Earthquake Resilient and Sustainable Society in 2011, and Innovations and Implementations in Earthquake Engineering in 2012, 2014, 2016 and 2018. The Forum aims at providing a platform of communication for professional experts and academic scholars. It has become an influential event in promoting the international cooperation and exchange in earthquake engineering both at home and abroad.
