From May 13 to 14, to coincide with 115th anniversary of Tongji University, the First Shanghai Interdisciplinary Forum on "low carbon development, environmental governance and health" was held online to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the establishment of Tongji Department of Environment. The forum was co-sponsored by Tongji University's interdisciplinary group of low carbon development, environmental governance and health, Shanghai environment and ecology Category IV Peak Discipline and Tongji University's College of Environmental Science and Engineering.

There were three parallel sessions of "climate change and carbon neutralization", "circular economy and sustainable water system" and "new pollutants and environmental health" and a special session for the youth on "peak disciplines and cross-disciplinary innovation" in addition to the plenary session. A total of 28 interdisciplinary academicians, experts and outstanding scholars were invited to make special reports for exploration of the cross- disciplinary integration and innovative development of "low-carbon development, environmental governance and health". Over 2000 people attended the forum online, including TONG Xiaohua, vice president of Tongji, heads of the Ministry of Development Planning and Discipline Construction, School of Medicine, the State Key Laboratory of Marine Geology, School of Mechanical Engineering, School of Chemical Science and Engineering, School of Marxism, School of Materials Science and Engineering, School of Economics and Management, School of Life Sciences and Technology, College of Environmental Science and Engineering, and the First Maternal and Child Health Care Hospital, teachers, students from Tongji University, Fudan University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, East China Normal University, East China University of Technology, East China University, Shanghai Electric Power University, as well as Tongji’s alumni and people from the industry.

At the opening ceremony of the forum, TONG Xiaohua, on behalf of the University, expressed his welcome to experts and scholars from all over the country for their attending the First Shanghai interdisciplinary Forum on "low carbon development, environmental governance and health" online, and showed his appreciation to all the participants for their long-term concern and support for Tongji University and its environmental discipline.
WU Minghong, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and vice president of Shanghai University, introduced the application of carbon-based functional materials in pollution and carbon reduction along two lines of pollution control & energy conservation and consumption reduction, and greenhouse carbon capture & new energy development on the topic of "construction of functional material system and collaborative pollution and carbon reduction in the context of double carbon". He made suggestions to the development trends of advanced environmental functional materials from a strategic perspective.
JIANG Changjun, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and former vice president of Tongji University, delivered a lecture on "computing and low carbon". He put forward new ideas for the future development of digital technology from the aspects of scientific and technological revolution and low-carbon development, low-carbon enabled digital technology and pointed out the development trends of artificial intelligence and cross-disciplinary innovation.
ZHU Dajian, director of the Institute of Sustainable Development and Management of Tongji University made a speech on "China's dual carbon development from the inverted U-shaped transformation". He started from explaining the basic concepts of dual carbon development, interpreted the connotation of different stages of China's dual carbon development, and shared his understanding of China's future dual carbon innovation and development.
In the three parallel sessions of "climate change and carbon neutralization", "circular economy and sustainable water system" and "new pollutants and environmental health", presentations were made by 18 experts and outstanding young scholars from Tongji University, Kunming University of Technology, Northeast Forestry University, Fudan University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Chinese Academy of Water Sciences, East China University of Science and Technology, the First Maternal and Child Health Care Hospital affiliated to Tongji University. The presentations covered the interdisciplinary areas of environment and materials, environment and information, environment and management, environment and chemistry, environment and ocean, and environment and medicine. The participants felt inspired on interdisciplinary integration and innovation as a result of heated discussions.
At the youth forum of "peak disciplines and cross-disciplanry innovation" held on May 14, outstanding young scholars from seven universities of Category IV Peak Disciplines of Environment and Ecology in Shanghai made academic reports and introduced many cutting-edge achievements in environmental cross-disciplines.
