PEI Gang, Professor of Cell Biology.
Professor Gang Pei took office as Tongji’s 25th president on August 16, 2007. Previously, he had served as president of Shanghai Institute for Biological Sciences, Chinese Academy of Sciences since May 2000.
Professor Pei received his B.Sc. degree in Pharmacy in 1982 and his master's degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences in 1984 from Shenyang Pharmaceutical University, Shenyang, China. He obtained his Ph. D in Biochemistry and Biophysics in 1991 from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in the US.聽
Professor Pei then undertook his post-doctoral training in Cell Biology and Signal Transduction at Duke University in the US until he was recruited as a Research Group Leader at Shanghai Institute of Cell Biology, cosponsored by the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the German Max-Planck Society in 1995.
Elected a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1999 and a member of the World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) in 2001, Prof. Pei has been a member of the 4th and 5th Scientific Advisory Board for the National Basic Research (973 Project), a coordinator of the National Key Research Program “Stem Cell Research”. He is currently the president of the Chinese Society for Cell Biology, the vice chairman of the Consortium for Globalization of Chinese Medicine, the Editor-in-Chief of聽Cell Research.聽
Professor Pei’s research mainly focuses on signal transduction of G-protein coupled receptors, its regulation mechanism, and the related diseases. He has published more than 100 research papers in the leading international journals including聽Cell, Nature, Molecular Cell, Nature Medicine, Nature Immunology聽and聽PNAS.聽Professor Pei has been invited to speak at many international conferences and symposia and received many academic honors.
