On October 16, the inaugural ceremony of Sino-German Research Center for Intelligent Science and Technology (Chinesisch-Deutsches Forschungszentrum für Intelligente Wissenschaft und Technologie) was held in Tongji University. More than 20peopleattended the ceremony, including WU Zhiqiang, Vice President of Tongji University and Dr. Dorothea Rüland, Secretary General of German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD: Deutscher Akademischer Austausch Dienst). Professor WU and Dr. Rüland made opening remarks and inaugurated the Center.
The mission of the Center is to: a) build a forward-looking and strategic research platform for intelligent science and technology that contributes to Shanghai Technology Innovation Center and the joint international research laboratory program supported by the Ministry of Education; b) respond to China’s Next Generation Artificial Intelligence Development Plan by working jointly with German universities and research institutions to tackle key problems, promote technology transfer, and catalyze the international leading disciplines at Tongji; c) facilitate efforts for launching joint international research laboratories and undertake key projects of science and technology of all levels through international cooperation; d) develop top-notch talents for the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) through dual degree programs with Germany and Europe; and e) host Sino-German summits for technology exchange and launch entrepreneurship contests for youths in China and Germany.
Five sub-centers, i.e. Cybernetics, Computer Science, Microelectronics, Information and Communication, and Electrical Engineering will be established under the Center, along with joint international laboratories and youth innovation and entrepreneurship funds, with the expectation of transforming the Center into a leading hub of research, an incubator of technological start-ups, and a training platform for BRI talents.
