Chinese Government Scholarships

1.Bilateral Program

The Ministry of Education of China offers full or partial scholarships in accordance with the educational exchange agreements or consensus between the Chinese government and governments of other countries, institutions, universities or international organizations. Durations of application (normally from early January to early April)vary fromcountry to country. To apply, please directly consult local Chinese Embassy (Consulate) or related local authorities.Scholarship recipients will receive admission documents from local Chinese Embassy/Consulate or related local authorities.

2.Chinese University Program

Offered by the Ministry of Education of China, this scholarship is for designated Chinese universities to recruit internationalmaster’s students and doctoral students.

Eligibility

1.Applicants should be non-Chinese citizen and in good health.

2.Applicants should have studied in a country other than the People's Republic of China. (Graduates who studied in China musthavegraduated forat least one academic year.)

3.Applicants formaster’s programs should be underthe age of 35. Applicants for doctoral programs should be underthe age of 40.

4.Applicants who apply for a joint training program majoring in their native language or the language and literatures in English, French as well as any other third language are not eligible.

5.Applicants who have successfully obtained any other Chinese government scholarship are not eligible.

Scholarship Coverage

The Chinese University Program provides a full scholarship which covers tuition waiver, accommodation, comprehensive medical insurance and living expenses (CNY3,000 per month for master’s students, and CNY 3,500 per month for doctoral students).

Step 1: Apply online

1) Complete the online application procedure at the website http://www.campuschina.org/ and print a hard copy of Application Form for Chinese Government Scholarship. (Overseas Study Program Type: B; Agency Number: 10247)

2) Log intothe website http://study-info.tongji.edu.cn and click“Chinese Government Scholarships” in the module “Application”. Complete the online application.

Step 2:Pay applicationfee

Pay the application fee by bank transfer and submita photocopy of transfer voucheralongwith other documents.

Step 3: Submit application documents

Applicants can either submit the application documents in person or send to International Student Office of Tongji University by post (See address in item VIII. The envelope should read“application for scholarships 2019”).

Application documents should be received by 10th Apr. No application will be accepted after the deadline. All the application documents required are as follows:

1) Application Form for Chinese Government Scholarship in two originals, each of which attached with one passport photo.

2) For other materials required, please refer to the section “Application Materials.”

Scholarship Outcomes

Outcomes will be available at http://study-info.tongji.edu.cn. Applicants may also visit the website http://study.tongji.edu.cn/ and click the column “Notice” for information.


Shanghai Government Scholarship

Established by Shanghai Municipal Education Committee, this scholarship supports outstanding international students for higher education in universities in Shanghai.

Eligibility

1.Applicants should be non-Chinese citizen and in good health.

2.Applicants formaster’s programs should be under the age of 35. Applicants for doctoral programs should be under the age of 40.

3.Applicants who have successfully obtained any other Chinese government scholarship are not eligible.

Scholarship Coverage

Type A: a full scholarship which covers tuition waiver, accommodation, comprehensive medical insurance and living expenses (CNY3,000 per month for master’s students andCNY3,500 per month for doctoral students).

Type B: a partial scholarship which covers tuition waiver and comprehensive medical insurance.

Confucius Institute Scholarship Program 2019 of Tongji University

For the purpose of cultivating qualified Chinese language teachers and facilitating the promotion of Chinese language and culture, the Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban) of China launches “Confucius Institute Scholarship” (CIS) to support outstanding students, scholars and currently employed Chinese language teachers recommended by Confucius Institutes, independently operated Confucius Classrooms as well as HSK test centers (hereinafter to be collectively referred to as “recommending institutions”) to study in Chinese universities and colleges (hereinafter referred to as “host institutions”).

Tongji University, located in Shanghai, is a prestigious institution of higher education which is directly under the Ministry of Education. After 110 years of development, Tongji University has become one of the leading universities in China with competitiveness. We warmly welcome applicants all over the world to study here.

I. Scholarships

All applicants shall be non-Chinese citizens and in good physical and mental conditions, well behaved with good academic performances who aspire to future careers in the teaching or international promotion of the Chinese language. The age of applicants should be between 16 and 35 by September 1st, 2018. Applicants who currently work as Chinese language teachers shall not exceed the age limit of 45.

A. Scholarship for Master’s Degree Programs in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (MTCSOL)

The program commences in September 2019 and provides scholarship for a maximum of two academic years. Applicants shall hold a Bachelor’s degree, and have a minimum score of 210 on the HSK Test (Level 5) as well as 60 on the HSKK test (Intermediate Level). Priority will be given to applicants who may provide a work contract with a teaching institution or relevant proof upon completing their studies in China.

B. Scholarship for One-Academic-Year Study

The program commences in September 2019, and provides scholarship for a maximum of 11 months. International students currently studying in China are not eligible.

i. TCSOL

Applicants shall have a minimum score of 270 on the HSK test (Level 3), and an HSKK test score is required.

ii. Chinese Language and Literature

Applicants shall have a minimum score of 180 on the HSK test (Level 4) and 60 on the HSKK test (Intermediate Level).

iii. Chinese Language Study

Applicants shall have a minimum score of 210 on the HSK test (Level 3).

C. Scholarship for One-Semester Study

The program commences either in September 2019 or March 2020, and provides scholarship of a maximum of 5 months.Applicants holding the X1 or X2 visa are not eligible.

iv. TCSOL, Chinese Language and Literature

Applicants shall have a minimum score of 180 on the HSK test (Level 3), and an HSKK test score is required.

II. Scholarship Coverageand Requirements

The Confucius Institute Scholarship provides full coverage on tuition fee, accommodation fee, living allowances and comprehensive medical insurance.

Tuition fee is under the overall planning and utilization of host institutions to provide teaching and management of scholarship students organizing cultural and social activities, as well as organizing Chinese language proficiency tests. Tuition fee does not cover the textbook expenses and tourist tickets.

Living allowance is granted by Tongji University on a monthly basis. The monthly allowance for one-academic-year study students and one-semester students is CNY 2,500 per person. For MTCSOL students, the monthly allowance is CNY 3,000 per person.

Students are required to complete the enrollment procedures for every semester within the stipulated period; otherwise, their scholarships may be cancelled. Students who are enrolled before the 15th (or on the 15th) of the month are entitled to the full allowance of that month while those enrolled after the 15th of that month are only entitled to half of the amount.

During the study period, for any student who is absent from China due to personal reasons for more than 15 days (excluding winter and summer holidays), the allowance during absence will be suspended.

For students who suspend study or drop out of school for personal reasons, or who are given disciplinary punishment by the host institutions, allowance will be terminated on the date of such suspension, dropping out or when the decision of such punishment is announced.

The living allowance for the month of graduation will be granted half a month after the date of graduation or expiration day of the study confirmed by host institutions.

Comprehensive medical insurance is purchased by the host institutions in accordance with relevant regulations of studying in China stipulated by the Ministry of Education of China. Insurance fee per person is 400 CNY for one-semester students, and 800 CNY per year for students on a program longer than one academic year.

Tongji University provides free accommodation in dormitories on campus (double room). Applicants do not need to apply by themselves or pay extra fee.

IV. Admission Procedure

1. Applicant can log on to the Confucius Institute Scholarship website (http://cis.chinese.cn) to look for Recommending Institutions and Host Institutions, to complete and submit the Confucius Institute Scholarship Application Form on line, and upload scanned copies of relevant supporting documents.

2. Recommending Institutions, Tongji University and Hanban will verify application materials online and select outstanding applicants. Hanban will grant full or partial scholarship to successful applicants. Applicant can check the application process, materials review and admission results on line. Hanban will complete the scholarship review and publish the results three months before enrollment of the scholarship winners.

3. After confirming with the successful applicants, Tongji University will post Letter of Admission, Visa Application Form for Foreigners to Study in China (JW202 Form) and other relevant documents to Recommending Institutions. The scholarship applicants could print their scholarship certificate online.

V. Application Documents

All applicants should also log on the application system for international students of Tongji University at http://study-info.tongji.edu.cn, fill out the “Application Form for International Students of Tongji University”, and attach the electronic files of the following materials. (No need to pay registration fee online.)

MTCSOL applicants must post the following materials to the Liaison Office of Confucius Institutes, Tongji University. (Not required for applicants for one-academic-year or one-semesterprograms)

1. A scanned copy of the photo page of the passport;

2. Degree certificate. If the certificate is not in Chinese or English,the true copy ofnotarized translations must be submitted.

* The certificate should be notarized by the local Chinese Embassy or Consulate (or foreign embassies or consulates in China).

Certificate of expected graduation issuedby the current academic institution (for applicants who will be graduating in the same year only). Degree certificate is required to be notarized and these documents must be submittedupon registration.

3. Original or notarized academic transcripts. If the academic transcripts are not in Chinese or English, thetrue copy of notarized translations must be submitted.

* The transcript should be notarized by local Chinese Embassy or Consulate (or foreign embassies or consulates in China).

4. Recommendation letters from two(associate) professors, in Chinese or English (signature and contact information arerequired, and the letters should be sealed in the envelop).

5. Personal statement. Around 1,000 words in Chinese, including such information as academic study, work experience, research achievements, research proposal and future plan after graduation.

6. Listand abstracts of published papers, and other supporting documents that can prove the applicant’s academic ability.

7. Applicant who is able to provide notarized employment agreement upon graduation will be prioritized for admission.

VI. Additional information

1.Only applicants who have posted all the above application materials required to Room 103,International School of Tongji University will be considered for admission (for MTCSOL Scholarship applicants only). Application documents will not be returned.The application deadline is May 20,2019.

2. Incomplete or unqualified applications will not be processed.

3. Applicants will be disqualified from application in case of fraudulent application materials or application materials are completed and submitted by someone else.

4. Scholarship will be canceled for those who cannot register with the host institutions on time.

5. Those who fail to register on time, fail to pass the health assessment, drop out midway and/or are suspended from school will be deprived of their scholarship.

6. Degree students are subject to an annual assessment according to the Annual Appraisal Procedures of Confucius Institute Scholarship.
