The Sino-Italian cooperation of Tongji University can date back to the 1980s in the last century, which were mainly exchanges and cooperation between professors. After entering the twenty-first century, the signing of the memorandum of higher education cooperation between China and Italy, especially the former Prime Minister Prodi’s visit to Tongji University and his presence on the foundation ceremony of the Sino-Italian Campus, is the symbol of Tongji University entering a period of fast and healthy development on Sino-Italian cooperation. Being the first government-level higher education cooperation project between the two countries, the Sino-Italian Campus has extended from the beginning dual-bachelor project in engineering, to multiple series of master and doctoral projects in fields like design, engineering, architecture, economics and management and so on.

The Sino-Italian Campus has also become the window and platform for the Sino-Italian production, education and research cooperation for Tongji University.
Tongji University now has cooperation with famous Italian universities like: Politecnico di Milano, Politecnico di Torino, University of Bologna, University of Pavia, University of Trento, University IUAV of Venice, Venice International University, University of Florence, University of Roma La Sapienza, University of Roma Tor Vergata and so on.

Meanwhile, Tongji University has also successful cooperation on scientific research, personnel training, culture exchange with governmental and non-governmental organizations like: the General Consulate of Italy in Shanghai, Italian Institute for Foreign Trade (ICE), The Italian Ministry for the Environment, Land and Sea (IMELS), Italian Education Center (UnItalia), the Emilia-Romagna Region, etc. In May 2008, the foundation of the Strategic Advisory Committee of the Sino-Italian Campus has provided an open platform with higher efficiency for enterprises, governmental, private organizations and individuals as well that are interested in Tongji University’s Sino-Italian cooperation projects.
