Tongji University actively explores the communication and cooperation with international organizations, like United Nations.

United Nations Environment Program and Tongji University signed cooperative agreement in May, 2002 that led to co-establishment of the UNEP-Tongji Institute of Environment for Sustainable Development (IESD), in order to promote the protection and management of the environment for purposes of sustainable development through education, research and dissemination of intellectual assets in collaboration with like-minded partners from the academic, government, corporate and international communities.

In May of 2007, World Heritage Institute of Training and Research - Asia and Pacific (Shanghai) was unveiled at Tongji University. The main objectives of WHITR-AP (Shanghai) shall be to improve the overall capacity of the Asia- Pacific region on the protection, management and research of the world heritage.
