"Just completed the surveying and mapping of the Antarctic Ice Sheet Airport and on my way back with the expedition team", said QIAO Gang from the College of Surveying and Geo-Informatics, Tongji University on the phone with us on February 13th 2019.

On November 2nd, 2018, QIAO, a member of the 35th Chinese Antarctic Scientific Expedition Team, embarked on a 162-day expedition by “Chinare” to Antarctica. They went through "devil westerlies" six times and conducted multidisciplinary research on the Ross Sea, the Amundsen Sea, Davis Sea and Prize Bay.

The construction of five Antarctic expedition stations of China will keep pace with the scientific expedition. Among them, the new station in Inexpressible Island will continue to carry out the land surveying and mapping, road reconnaissance and basic geological exploration to collect and supplement the preliminary data of construction projects; All work will be completed including construction of facilities under the ice on the second phase of the Taishan Station. Meanwhile, the inland expedition team will land on the top of the Antarctic ice sheet and carry out astronomical work, ice core drilling and geodesy at the Kunlun Station by using advanced astronomical and geodetic absolute gravity survey equipment. "Tongji University has long been involved in all this work", said QIAO.
