The UNEP Global Environment Outlook team visit Tongji University

On the afternoon of August 31st, Executive Vice President Lu Peiming met with Pierre Boileau, the head of the Global Environment Outlook of the United Nations Environment Programme, and his team. People from the Office of Foreign Affairs, the School of Environmental Science and Engineering, and the UNEP-Tongji Institute of Environment for Sustainable Development joined the meeting.

Lu Peiming showed his welcome to the delegation and expressed his gratitude to the important support from UNEP to the sustainable development of Tongji University. Pierre Boileau stated that Tongji University is one of the closest universities in the world to cooperate with the United Nations Environment Programme. He expressed gratitude to Tongji University for its strong support of the Shanghai Conference and looked forward to further enriching the content of cooperation and deepening exchanges between the two sides. Both sides discussed the preparations for the upcoming Global Conference of Environmental Scientists to be held in Shanghai.

The Global Environment Outlook (GEO) series of reports are important publications of the UNEP, which review and analyze the global environmental situation, trends, and prospects. It is significant for global green development and human green future. Since 2017, Tongji University has been involved in the authoring of Global Environment Outlook reports, and has servied as the Global Vice Chairman of the work since 2022. The Global Conference of Environmental Scientists and the Second Authoring Seminar on Seventh Sesssion of Global Environment Outlook, jointly organized by UNEP and Tongji University, were held in Shanghai from September 4th to 7th. It gathered top environmental experts, decision-makers, and business representatives from home and abroad to deepen their understanding of the challenges of sustainable environmental development. Participants focused on formulating solutions, promoting ecological-priority concept, resource and efficiency intensificatio, and green and low-carbon development in China to supporting the global process of green, low-carbon and sustainable development.
