On the evening of December 28th, the ceremony for Touching Tongji Awards 2018” was held in the auditorium at Siping Campus. The Awards were intended to find inspirational people, spread their inspirational stories and create more inspirational moments. Ten winners and ten nominees went on the stage to receive the awards amid cheers from the audience after videos on their touching stories were shown and remarks on them were read.



The ten Touching Tongji people were: DONG Jianhong, a ninety-two-year-old professor form the College of Architecture and Urban Planning, who devoted himself to the education of urban planning in the past seventy years; Prof. HU Xiangdong from the College of Civil Engineering, who used the pioneering Freezing-Sealing Pipe Roof Method (FSPR) for the 255-meter extremely difficult tunneling of the Gongbei Tunnel during the construction of Hongkong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge; Prof. YANG Quiqing from the College of Architecture and Urban Planning, who was committed to rural planning for revitalization in the countryside by living a simple life of constantly walking on his bare feet in the mud of the countryside; Prof. LI Zhancai from the School of Marxism, a famous teacher in ideological and political education with a strong belief in Marxism, who was dedicated to education with his unique teaching skills; the  “Sanshen” Team from the School of Ocean and Earth Sciences who made continuous efforts for decades to further the development of deep sea diving and ocean drilling in the South China Sea and China’s deep sea observation network in an attempt to make China an ocean-strong country; ZHANG Peiying, an associate professor from the School of Economics & Management, who kept offering her knowledge, intelligence and love to Ding Xi, one of the toughest places in the northwest part of China; LIU Yingjun, an alumnus from the College of Civil Engineering who gave up his well-paid job to settle down in Xizang (Tibet) and devoted his youth to the development of the western part of China; FAN Guoxin, a PhD student on the Tongji-Harvard joint program who successfully developed a new positioning and navigation system for spine surgery, the clinical application of which had eased thousands of patients’ pain; LIU Tengyuan, a fourth-year student from the School of Electronic and Information Engineering who went almost deaf at middle school but never stopped his strenuous efforts in pursuit of his dream after regaining his “hearing” with the help of cochlear implant at Tongji University; Dr. Christian Bode, Secretary-General of the former German Academic Exchange Service Center and DAAD Commissioner CDH/CDHK, who contributed greatly to both the educational, academic and cultural communication between China and Germany and the cooperation between Tongji University and Germany.

During the ceremony, people, with tears in their eyes, were touched by their inspirational stories time and again, and rounds of applause echoed in the auditorium.
