On the evenings of November 21 and 22, more than 1,000 Tongji teachers and students gathered in the auditorium of the Siping Campus for the large-scale original stage play Together on the Same Boat, which was presented by the acting majors from the College of Arts and Media. Based on Tongji’s history, the play tells the story of Tongji students’ courageous struggles and quests over the past 100 years, and celebrates the salvatory feeling of generations of Tongji people who have made painstaking efforts to help the world while striving for self-improvement.

The original stage play Together on the Same Boat is composed of the prologue Together with No Suspicion, nine scenes: "A Pillar of Medical Science, Internal Displacement, Affection for Li Zhuang, Weeping Blood for the Country, Stormy Weather, Scattering Darkness, Love in the Same Boat, The Most Beautiful Scenery, "Eternal Responsibility, and the final chapter Miracle Flash. The play was written by teachers HAI Lihong and QIAN Zheng from the College of Art and Media, directed by QIAN Zheng, and performed by acting students. During the two-hour performance, the play gave a panoramic account of the commendable 113-year history of Tongji, including the founding of the University, internal relocation, the War of Resistance against Japanese invasion, the founding of the University in Li-Zhuang, the national adjustment of faculties and departments after the founding of the People's Republic of China, the major contributions in the reform and opening up, the earthquake relief, and the outlook for the future of Tongji.

After the performance, the University Deputy Party Secretary XU Jianping came up to the stage and greeted all the cast and crew cordially.

As an artistic expression of strong ideological leadership and high acceptance by young people, the large-scale original stage play: Together on the Same Boat has been recognized widely since its premiere in 2017, and has become a shining card for promoting the socialist culture, conducting moral education, and enhancing campus thoughts and sentiments at the Tongji campus. The play demonstrates truly the will of the world-renowned University with a history of over 100 years to advance in unity and solidarity against all odds, as well as displaying its faith in never forgetting to help the country. With high enthusiasm and vivid artistic expressions, Tongji people interpret the profound connotation of the Together on the Same Boat spirit which inspires the new generation of Tongji people -- just like the old alumni in the play, to help each other on the same boat, to work hard for self-improvement, to carry forward the Tongji spirit in their own fields, and to walk steadily into the new era.
