Tongji University and the Foreign Environmental Cooperation Center of MEE signs Agreement to Increase International Cooperation in Ecological Environment

The China-Africa Youth Roundtable Dialogue on Climate Change and Biodiversity Conservation was held in Beijing on November 25. Deputy Director General of the Department of International Cooperation of the Ministry of Ecology and Environment (MEE) XIAO Xuezhi, Director of the Department of Climate Change of MEE CHEN Zhihua, United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Resident Representative in China TU Ruihe, Tongji Executive Vice President WU Jiang, and Party Committee Secretary and Deputy Director of Foreign Environmental Cooperation Center of MEE ZHOU Guomei attended the event and delivered their speeches.

 

The Cooperation Agreement was signed between Tongji and Foreign Environmental Cooperation Center of MEE at the conference, seeking to increase international cooperation in ecological environment to include the development of the Green Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), improve regional ecological and environmental governance, establish a sound regional environmental cooperation network, plan joint research on regional sustainable environment, build ecological and environmental protection capacity, and foster closer cooperation in environmental policy and technologies between China and Africa. WU Jiang and ZHOU Guomei signed the agreement on behalf of both parties.

Representatives of international organizations (United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF), Gesellschaft fur Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), World Wildlife Fund (WWF)) and university experts attended the conference held on- and off-line. Representatives of Chinese and foreign teachers, and students from Tongji were invited to the conference.

 

On November 24, the China-Africa Environmental Cooperation Center (CAECC) was inaugurated in Beijing. The MEE Minister HUANG Runqiu, Vice Minister ZHAO Yingmin, Assistant Minister of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs DENG Li, Ambassador of Senegal and African Co-Chair of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) to China Mamadou Ndiaye, and African Diplomatic Corps Dean and Cameroon Ambassador to China Martin Mbana attended the conference and presented their speeches.

For the past 15 years with the support of the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST), the MEE, and the Ministry of Commerce, Tongji, has been engaged in water resource management and water treatment demonstration projects. Further, Tongji has offered degree and non-degree training seminars in Africa to promote the application of environmentally friendly green technologies in African countries to improve utilization efficiency of water resources and mitigate the effects of climate change. Currently, more than 200 African students have graduated from Tongji with master and doctoral degrees in environmental disciplines, and they are now serving their own countries and international organizations.
